Matt DiBuono Wins Hammer Throw at 2009 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships

Charlotte, N.C. - Last Wednesday night, senior thrower Matt DiBuono won the 2009 Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Award as the top male athlete at Fordham. On Saturday, he showed why he was worthy, winning the hammer throw title for the third consecutive year at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championship being held at Charlotte's Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.

DiBuono, who also won the Atlantic 10 weight throw championship during the indoor season, won with a throw of 208' 5", more than ten feet better than runner-up Grant West of Temple. He also placed 15th in the discus (127' 0").

One school record fell on the first day of competition as Sherilyn Groeninger placed tenth in the 100m in a time of 12.54, surpassing the former school mark of 12.58 set by Courtney Boccardi in 1999.  

Also starring for the Rams on day one was the women's 4x800 relay team of Kerri Gallagher, Kathleen Reilly, Catherine Groene and Melissa Salerno that placed third in a school record time of 8:55.72, breaking the former mark of 8:58.48 set in 1991.

Also scoring for the Fordham men on day one were Jason Grant, who placed sixth in the high jump with a leap of 6' 4.25", and Ken Baron, who took eighth in the pole vault with a season-best vault of 13' 3.5".

In the decathlon, Augustus Gleason is in fifth place and Vincent Servello in sixth place after day one. Gleason took third in the high jump (6' 0"), fourth in the 400m (53.04), seventh in the shot put (32' 3.75"), eighth in the 100m (12.00) and eleventh in the long jump (17' 7"). Servello was fifth in the 400m (53.14), seventh in the 100m (11.97), eighth in the high jump (5' 6"), ninth in the long jump (18' 3.75") and eleventh in the shot put (29' 0").

Other competitors on day one for the men included Chris Kozlowski, who was 12th in the hammer (145' 0") and 14th in the discus (129' 8"), John Korevec and Andrew Spanos, who finished 13th (9:47.01 - season-best) and 14th (9:47.72), respectively, in the 3000m steeplechase, Matt Cardinale, who placed 14th in the hammer (127' 1") and 19th in the discus (92' 8") and Tim Hartnett and Casey Barrett, who were 19th (33:10.88 - season-best) and 20th (33:16.80), respectively, in the 10,000m.

In men's relay action, the 4x800 squad of Tim Hutchinson, Clifton Hilario, Kevin Fitzgerald and Brian Schmidt took third in a season-best time of 7:29.06.

On the women's side, senior Jeana Fletcher sits in third place after the first day of the heptathlon competition with 2,651 points. Fletcher won the shot put event with a toss of 38' 0.25" while taking third in the 100m hurdles (15.64), tying for sixth in the high jump (5' 0.5") and placing eleventh in the 200m (28.50).

Scoring for the Fordham women on day one were Blair Hassell, who placed fourth in the javelin with a season-best throw of 119' 11", and Brigid Moriarty, who took fifth in the 10,000m in a season-best time of 37:36.50.

Other competitors for the women included Maggie McGowan, who was 12th in the pole vault (9' 6.25" - season-best) and 18th in the 100m hurdles (17.28), Dana Mitchell, who finished 18th in the 3000m steeplechase (12:52.66), Elisabeth Warren, who took 19th in the long jump (16' 4.25"0) and Christine Willeford, who was 19th in the 100m (13.01).

In team the team competitions, the Fordham men are in seventh place after day one while the women are in tenth.

Sunday is the final day of the Atlantic 10 Championships as the sprint finals will take place throughout the day with the women's 4x100 meter relay kicking off the track events at 10:00 a.m. while the men's shot put opens up the field events at the same time. The multi-events will resume competition starting at 8:45 p.m. with the men's decathlon.
