Bronx, N.Y. - As the 2008-09 season begins to wind down, the Fordham University Athletic Department held its 75th annual Block F Awards Dinner at the Villa Barone Manor on April 29th to honor Fordham University's student-athletes for their accomplishments during the academic year.
Among those honored were Annie Zopf, who received the 2009 Terence O'Donnell Award, Randall Hurst, who was named the 2008-09 women's basketball team MVP, and manager Mia Farbes, who was awarded the Patrick Kenneally award.
Zopf won the the O'Donnell Memorial Award which is presented to the Fordham athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, loyalty, dedication and self-discipline. The award is in memory of Terry O'Donnell, a 1955 graduate who died in a military plane crash shortly after graduation.
A four-year member of the women's basketball program, Zopf truly represents the spirit of this award. Over her career, she has done everything asked of her without question. She has been her team's unquestioned leader on and off the court and no statistic could truly measure what she means to her team. She has shown an incredible work ethic and strength of character which makes her team better each and every day.
Zopf, who started in 91 of 111 career games, closed out her career this winter averaging 8.3 ppg and 3.2 rpg and she notched team-best 59 assists along with 28 steals. She closed out her career with 108 three-pointers, good for seventh place on the Fordham all-time list.
Hurst, who just completed her first season at Fordham after transferring from Daytona Beach Community College, appeared in all 29 games for the Rams in 2008-09, starting 27. She led team in scoring (12.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg), ranking 16th in the Atlantic 10 in scoring and 15th in rebounding. Hurst was also third on team with 31 steals and was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week once in 2008-09.
Farbes, a sophomore, was presented with the 2009 Patrick Kenneally award which is presented to a Fordham student who serves the Athletic Department in capacities other than athletic participation. The award honors the memory of Pat Kenneally, equipment and business manager for 54 years.
