Rowing Competes at Sacred Heart

April 8, 2009

Shelton, Conn. - The Fordham University crew competed along with Fairfield and Army at Sacred Heart on Saturday, April 4th, in Shelton, Conn., in less than ideal weather conditions.

Despite the weather, the Fordham varsity boats won all their events, capped by a win from the varsity eight. The Rams easily won the race, defeating runner-up Sacred Heart by almost 20 seconds.

The junior varsity 8 race turned out much like the varsity, with Fordham winning by 5-6 boat lengths over Fairfield and Army taking third.

The Fordham varsity 4 shell also outpaced the field, crossing the line 23 seconds ahead of Army.

Unfortunately, the Fordham women's novice boats didn't enjoy the luck of their varsity counterparts as mechanical difficulties kept the Rams from competing in the novice events. The novice 8 boat ran aground on the way to the starting line and the crew had to get out and push, causing a fin to break off the shell. The novice 4 was forced out of their race when the shell they were using, which was loaned to the Rams by Sacred Heart, was discovered to have a broken seat.

The Fordham rowing squad will next be in action on Thursday, April 9th, as they host Iona College at Orchard Beach beginning at 9:00 a.m.
