Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's rowing squad successfully defended its Metropolitan title, defeating 16 other crews at the 2009 Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association's Spring Championships at Orchard Beach Lagoon on Saturday. The Rams won three of the six women's races, including the varsity 8.
The varsity 8 scored an easy victory over nine opponents. The Rams easily won their heat, crossing the line over 15 seconds ahead of Sacred Heart. In the finals, the Rams got out to an early lead and again beat Sacred Heart to the finish line, covering the course in 8:10.3, almost 18 seconds ahead of the Pioneers.
In the varsity 4, Fordham won its six-boat heat and then edged Fairfield in the final, finishing just over three seconds in front of the Stags in the final.
The second varsity 4 also won its race, beating five other schools.
In the novice 8, the Rams placed third in its heat, behind Fairfield and Iona, and then took third in the finals, behind Fairfield and Army but well ahead of RPI, Iona and Albany.
In the novice 4, Fordham placed third in its heat, behind Fairfield and Iona and then finished fifth in the finals.
The Fordham men contributed to the win, winning three of the six men's races, including the varsity 8 and varsity 4.
The Rams will next be in action on Saturday, May 3rd as they compete in the Mid-Atlantic Championships at Occoquan Reservoir in Virginia.
