Golf Opens Play at 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Fordham Univeristy golf squad opened play at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Golf Championship at Mission Inn Resort where the Rams sit in 12th place following the first round.

Three-time defending champion Charlotte holds a 12-shot lead over Temple and Xavier Friday's opening round. Playing under brilliant sunshine on the 6,887-yard, par-71 course, the 49ers fired a two-under 282, while Temple and Xavier are tied for second at 294.

St. Bonaventure is in fourth place at 12-over par 296, followed by Rhode Island (299), Richmond (306), Saint Joseph's (308), Dayton (313), George Washington (314), Duquesne (319), La Salle (320) and Fordham (325).

Charlotte was paced by senior Stefan Wiedergruen, who leads the field with a three-under 68 after recording five opening round birdies. St. Bonaventure teammates Brennan Payne and Nathan Peck are tied for second overall at one-under par, while Xavier's Mike Beausejour, Kevin Busteed of Temple, Rhode Island's Taylor Fontaine, Steve Hudacek of Saint Joseph's and Mitchell are tied for sixth overall at 72.

Leading the Rams on day one was Devon O'Rourke and Nik Andresen, who each shot a seven-over 78 over the first 18 holes of the tournament to tie for 29th overall. Charles Smith carded an 83 on the first day, good for a tie for 53rd, while Nico Mizono shot an 86 (58th) and Zach Murray a 96 (60th).
