Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham University rowers competed in their first major regatta of the spring season on Saturday, rowing at the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River.

The Rams were led by the varsity eight boat, which took fifth in the finals. The varsity eight led off the competition by winning its heat to advance to the finals. In the heat, Fordham was able to nudge out Navy, crossing the line just under a second ahead of the Midshipmen.

In the finals, the Rams placed fifth, behind Bucknell, Saint Joseph's, Drexel and Trinity and ahead of Rutgers. This is an improvement of an eight-place finish at last year's Murphy Cup for the Fordham varsity eight.

"I was more than pleased with the results at the Murphy Cup Regatta," said head coach Ted Bonanno. "The competition this year was much tougher than in year's past, with so many more entries this year."

The Rams also competed in the novice four and novice eight as well as the varsity four but none of the shells was able to advance to the finals. The varsity four finished third in its heat as Navy jumped out to a commanding lead and the Rams battled Lafayette for second place, finishing a boat length behind the Leopards.

The novice four took fourth in its heat, behind Bucknell, West Virginia and Iona and ahead of Rutgers while the novice eight placed sixth.

The Fordham women's crew will return to action on Saturday, April 4th, as the Rams compete against Sacred Heart, Fairfield and Army in Shelton, Connecticut.
