Monmouth, N.J. - The Fordham University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed at 14th Annual Monmouth Season Opener at Monmouth University where John Korevec won the 3000m steeplechase for the men and Dana Mitchell placed second in the 800m on the women's side.
Korevec covered the course in a time of 10:20.36, almost ten seconds better than the runner-up, while Mitchell clocked a 2:24.76 in the 800m, just over a second off of the winning time.
The Fordham men also had success in the 10,000m, taking three of the top six spots. Tim Hartnett placed second in the race in a time of 33:21.29 while Casey Barrett was right behind him, taking third in a time of 33:26.77. Tom Papain was the other top-six finisher for the Rams, placing sixth in 34:03.61.
Others performers who finished in the top 20 for the Fordham men included Ken Baron, who placed fourth in the pole vault (12' 5.5"); Carter Ward, who finished fifth in the 800m (2:01.51); Chris Kozlowski, who took seventh in the hammer (142' 2"), tenth in the shot put (44' 11") and 12th in the discus (119' 9"); Sam Stuart, who took eighth in the 200m (2:02.10); Vincent Servello, who was sixth in the pole vault (11' 5.75"), eighth in the long jump (18' 8.5") and 15th in the 110m hurdles (19.03); Thomas Kelly and Stephen Donnelly, who took tenth and eleventh, respectively, in the 1500m (4:11.52 and 4:11.68); Erik Lawrence, who was eleventh in the 5000m (15:55.33); Fred Wertz, who finished 11th in the 100m (11.91) and 200m (23.77); Doug Petrullo, who placed 13th in the javelin (136' 8"); Frank Massaro, who placed 14th in the 100m (12.09) and 19th in the 200m (24.42); Steven Dickinson, who was 14th in the 110m hurdles (18.95); Andrew Spanos, who finished 14th in the 5000m (16:15.87); Andrew Roddin, who was 16th in the 5000m (16:26.81); Matt Cardinale, who took 17th in the discus (101' 8"); Patrick McDonough, who was 19th in the 1500m (4:16.54) and Rich Grandelli, who placed 20th in the 800m (2:07.96).
In men's relays, the 4x100 team of Massaro, Wertz, Dickinson and Augustus Gleason took second in a time of 45.85 while the 4x400 "A" team of Wertz, Ward, Donnelly and Thomas Kelly placed sixth (3:33.86), the 4x400 "B" team of Stuart, Jarrett Anistranski, Servello and Grandelli placed eight (3:36.36). The 1600m sprint relay of Dickinson, Massaro, Gleason and McDonough also finished eighth (3:49.75).
On the women's side, top 20 finishers included Blair Hassell, who placed fourth in the javelin (108' 2"); Maggie McGowan, who took seventh in the 100m hurdles 918.54) and ninth in the pole vault (9' 0.25"); Madelyn Weingart, who was eighth in the javelin (82' 6"); Emily Smith, who took eighth in the 100m hurdles (18.71); Mary LeSage, who finished ninth in the 1500m (5:03.14); Bridget Carroll, who took eleventh in the 1500m (5:10.32); Catalina Hallock, who placed eleventh in the 800m (2:24.76); Jana Trenk, who took eleventh in the 5000m (19:40.92); Kelly Caggiano, who was 13th in the javelin (66' 0") and 14th in the hammer (74' 8"); Lauren Sweeney, who finished 13th in the 800m (2:37.04); Jacqueline Prevete, Susanne Hansen and Kelsey Komich, who placed 13th, 14th and 16th, respectively, in the 5000m (20:01.64, 20:06.75 and 21:26.70); Sheena Parand, who took 14th in the 400m (1:03.75); Kerry Kwalwasser, who placed 15th in the 200m (29.19); Nako Nakatsuka, who was 15th in the 800m (2:38.16)
In women's relay action, the 4x400 team of Kwalwasser, Hallock, Lesage and Mitchell took second in 4:16.61 while the 4x100 team of Smith, Kwalwasser, McGowan and Parand placed third (56.70) and the 1600 sprint relay of Smith, McGowan, Parand and Carroll placed sixth (4:35.11).
The Fordham men's and women's outdoor track and field team will next be in action on Friday, April 3rd as they compete at the Colonial Relays in the Williamsburg, Va.
