Outdoor Track Opens Season at Morgan State Classic

Baltimore, Md. - The Fordham University men's and women's outdoor track and field squads opened their 2009 season at the Morgan State University Classic Opener on Saturday with both the men and the women's teams winning five events.

Event winners for the men included Chris Kozlowski, who won the discus with a throw of 120' 2" while placing second in the shot put (45' 10"); Vincent Servello, who was victorious in the 110m hurdles in a time of 19.27 second, while taking third in the long jump (19' 4") and fourth in the 400m hurdles in 1:01.78; Clifton Hilario, who won the 800m in a time of 1:56.56; Tom Finnerty, who took first in the 1500m in 4:00.85 and Ken Baron, who had the top pole vault performance with a vault of 12' 0".

Winners for the women included Jeana Fletcher, who took first in both the high jump, with a leap of 5' 2", and the 100m hurdles, with a 16.31 clocking, and Catherine Groene, who won the triple jump with a jump of 36' 10.25" and took second in the 400m hurdles (1:07.50). Melissa Salerno and Elisabeth Warren also won events for Fordham with Salerno taking first in the 1500m in a time of 4:44.86 while Warren was victorious in the 100m in a time of 13.03 and she also placed second in the long jump (17' 2") and third in the 200m (26.96).

Besides Hilario winning the 800m, the Rams were well represented in the event as Tim Hutchinson, took fourth (1:57.32), Christopher Lyons fifth (50.97), Paul Szczepaniak sixth (1:59.31), Stephen Donnelly seventh (1:59.56), Thomas Kelly eighth (1:59.56) and Patrick McDonough ninth (2:04.23).

Fordham also found success in the 1500m with Finnerty winning the event, Brian Riley placing third (4:05.13), Sam Stuart fifth (4:09.52), Brian Horowitz sixth (4:09.82), Kevin Fitzgerald seventh (4:10.09), Andrew Spanos eighth (4:14.10), Ryan Campi ninth (4:16.00), Tim Hartnett eleventh (4:19.80) and Tom Papain 12th (4:21.54).

Also competing for the men were Jason Grant, who took second in both the high jump (6' 4") and triple jump (44' 9.75"); Brian Schmidt, who placed third in the 400m (50.51); Christopher Lyons, who was fifth in the 400m (50.97); Fred Werst, who took seventh in the 200m (23.65) and tenth in the 100m (11.95); Nick Delligatti, who placed eighth in the 100m (11.78); Frank Massaro, who finished ninth in both the 100m (11.87) and 200m (24.12); Carter Ward, who was ninth in the 400m (53.52) and Jarrett Anistranski, who finished eleventh in the 400m (54.27).

The men's 4x100 team of Massaro, Wertz, Lyons and Delligatti placed second in a time of 44.091 while the Men's 4x400 "A" relay of Delligatti, Hilario, Schmidt and Lyons placed second in 3:90.13. The Fordham 4x400 "B" team of Fitzgerald, Ward, Hutchinson and Anistranski finished fourth (3:28.41).

For the women, success came in the 1500m as the Rams had the top seven performers with Salerno winning the event, Kathleen Reilly placing second (4:57.32), Kerri Gallagher third (5:01.79), Brigid Moriarty fourth (5:04.14), Dana Mitchell fifth (5:10.12), Jacqueline Prevete sixth (5:32.11) and Jana Trenk seventh (5:45.73).

Other women competing for the Rams included Christine Willeford, who was third in the 100m (13.19); Mary LeSage, who placed third in the 800m (2:28.67); Sherilyn Groeninger, who took fourth in the 200m (27.21); Lauren Sweeney, who was sixth in the 800m (2:30.17); Kelly Connolly, who finished seventh in the 400m (1:02.03); Bridget Carroll, who placed seventh in the 800m (2:31.69); Kerry Kwalwasser, the eighth person across the line in the 400m (1:03.58); Sheena Parand, who placed eighth in the 800m (2:33.24) and Deanna Minasi, who took ninth in the 400m (1:04.80).

In women's relays, the 4x100 team of Groeninger, Willeford, Minasi and Warren won the race in a time of 51.11 while the 4x400 team of Connolly, Salerno, Reilly and Gallagher took third in 4:03.46.

The outdoor track and field teams will next be in action on Saturday, March 28th, as they compete at the Raleigh Relays.
