Box Score

Charlottesville, Va. - With the weather still playing games with starts times and snow scheduled for Sunday, the Fordham baseball team was put into a doubleheader on Saturday, where the Rams dropped a 7-3 decision to Virginia, and a 15-3 ballgame to Delaware.

Fordham is now 1-6, while Virginia and Delaware improved to 8-0 and 4-3, respectively.

In a rare 9:00 AM start, Virginia's Andrew Carraway threw eight innings of four-hit ball, giving up just one earned run, while Steven Proscia was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, as the Cavaliers went on to a 7-3 victory.

The Rams benefited from the early start in the first inning as they picked up two runs on three Virginia errors. Danny Leach started the frame with a single, and moved to second on an error, which allowed Mike Mobbs to reach. Leach and Mobbs then pulled off a double steal, where the throw to second went into centerfield, allowing Leach to score. The ball was then misplayed by the centerfielder, allowing Mobbs to score as well.

The Cavaliers tied the game right away in the bottom half of the first. With two outs, Phil Gosselin drew a walk, followed by a single by Dan Grovatt, which sent Gosselin to third. Steven Proscia then knocked an infield single down the third base line to score Gosselin. After a double steal, Grovatt scored on an error later in the inning to tie the game.

Virginia then went up 4-2 in the bottom of the second, as they picked up a bases loaded walk to Gosselin and a sacrifice fly by Grovatt.

Virginia increased their lead to 5-2 in the fourth, as Jarrett Parker walked, advanced to third on a steal and error, and then scored on an RBI-single by Tyler Cannon. Then in the fifth, Jared King connected for an RBI-single to score Barr, who reached on a single and moved to second on a balk.

After the Cavaliers made it 7-2 with a single run in the seventh, Fordham got their run in the eight to make it a 7-3 game. Pinch hitter Michael Taddei started with a single to center and was pinch run for by Brian Kownacki. Kownacki though would be out on a Leach fielder's choice. Leach then stole second and scored on a single by Bobby DiNardo.

Brando Casalicchio (0-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits and six walks in 3 2/3 innings, while Bobby Coyle (1 1/3 innings) and Jordan Grangard (three innings) each gave up one earned run. At the plate, Danny Leach was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Mike Mobbs was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.

In game two, Delaware's Brad Miller threw seven innings of five-hit ball, while Carlos Alonso and Matt Greco each drove in three runs, as the Blue Hens posted a 15-3 win over Fordham.

Delaware got started early, collecting four runs in the top of the first. With two outs, the Blue Hens loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch. Merkler then hit a hot shot to third, which couldn't be handled, allowing Cuneo to score. Shockley then connected for a two-run single to make it, 3-0. Greco then hit a grounder to second that went through second baseman Ryan Maghini for an error, which brought in the fourth run of the inning.

The Rams got on the board in the bottom of the third, as Brian Kownacki singled with two outs, and advanced on a wild pitch. After walk to Leach, Alex Kenny singled to center to score Kownacki.

Delaware responded with two runs in the fourth on a two-run home run to right by Jared Olson, his fourth of the year.

After Delaware picked up two more runs in the fifth, Fordham got a single run back in the bottom half of the inning, as Ryan Maghini led off with a triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stephen McSherry.

The Blue Hens then insured the win with a six-run outburst in the top of the eighth to lead, 14-2, and picked up a single run in the ninth.

Fordham capped the scoring in the bottom of the ninth, as McSherry drove in Michael Taddei with an RBI-double, after Taddei singled.

Daniel Munday (0-1) took the loss allowing three earned runs in three innings of work. At the plate, Alex Kenny was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Wednesday, March 4th, as they host Manhattan College in the annual Battle of the Bronx at Houlihan Park, beginning at 3:00 PM.
