Complete Day Two Results
Kingston, R.I. - The Fordham University men's and women's indoor track and field squads closed out competition at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Fieldhouse where the Fordham men placed fifth and the women 12th.
Leading the way was senior Jeana Fletcher, who won the women's pentathlon competition with 3,559 points, just five points ahead of runner-up Shayna Daugherty of Rhode Island, as Fletcher qualified for the ECAC Championships. She won the shot put (37' 10.5"), took second in the long jump (16' 8.5") and placed fourth in the 55m hurdles (8.78), the high jump (5' 5.25" - season best) and the 800m (2:28.05).
Fletcher also took ninth in the high jump (5' 3") and 14th in the shot put (38' 1.5") on day two.
Also earning All-Conference honors were two men's relay teams, the 4x400 and the 4x800. The 4x400 team of Nick Delligatti, Brian Schmidt, Brandon Ryan and Christopher Lyons placed second in a time of 3:20.93 as did the 4x800 squad of Brian Horowitz, Ryan Serkes, Kevin Fitzgerald and Tim Hutchinson in a time of 7:46.18. Each team earned Second Team All-Conference honors.
In the men's team competition, Charlotte won its third title in the past four years with 218 points followed by Rhode Island (152), La Salle (76), Temple (67), Fordham (63), Richmond (55), Massachusetts (51), Saint Joseph's (50), Saint Louis (24) and Xavier (24).
In the women's team competition, Charlotte won its fourth straight Atlantic 10 title with 175 points followed by Dayton (139), Rhode Island (106), Temple (77), Richmond (73), Massachusetts (49), Duquesne (34), La Salle (30), Saint Louis (26), Xavier (26), Saint Joseph's (25) and Fordham (20).
Besides the relays, Jason Grant scored in two events for the men while Brian Schmidt, and Brandon Ryan each scored in the 500m and Matt DiBuono and Chris Kozlowski each scored in the shot put. Grant placed fourth in both the triple jump, with a season-best jump of 45' 4.5", and the high jump, with a leap of 6' 6.25". DiBuono, who won the weight throw with a school-record toss on day one, placed fourth in the shot put and qualified for the IC4A Championships with a season-best toss of 51' 2.25", while Kozlowski took seventh in the event with a put of 48' 4.75". Schmidt took fourth in the 500m in 1:05.36 while Ryan finished seventh in the race in 1:06.55.
Vincent Servello also scored for the men, placing sixth in the heptathlon with 3,965 points. On day two, he placed second in the 1000m (2:52.04), sixth in the 55m hurdles (8.98) and seventh in the pole vault (11' 3.75").
Tom Finnerty was the other scorer for the Fordham men, placing fifth in the 1000m in 2:30.76.
Scoring for the women on day two was Kerri Gallagher, who finished third in the 1000m in 2:58.77.
Also competing for the men were Brian Riley, who was 12th in the 3000m (8:45.98), Matt Cardinale, who took 15th in the shot put (34' 5.75"), Sam Stuart, who placed 15th in the mile (4:28.08), Thomas Kelly, who finished 21st in the mile (4:35.23), Casey Barrett, who was 21st in the 3000m (9:07.86) and Tom Papain, who took 23rd in the 3000m (9:17.36).
Also competing for the women were Catherine Groene, who placed ninth in the triple jump (36' 9.75"), Jana Trenk, who was 28th in the 3000m (11:18.32) and Susanne Hansen, who took 30th in the 3000m (11:53.88).
In women's relays, the 4x400 team of Christine Willeford, Kelly Connolly, Elisabeth Warren and Groene placed seventh in a time of 4:01.63 while the 4x800 team of Kerri Gallagher, Dana Mitchell, Mary LeSage and Bridget Carroll placed 11th in a time of 9:38.90.
The Fordham men's and women's indoor track and field squads will next be in action on Friday, February 27th, as they compete at the NYU FasTrack Invitational at the 168th Street Armory beginning at 1:00 p.m.
