In each of the past two years, Fordham's Matt DiBuono finished second in the weight throw at the Atlantic 10 Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship. This year would be different for the senior as he won his first weight throw title with a school record throw on the first day of competition of the 2009 championship being held at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House.
DiBuono won the weight throw with a Fordham record toss of 61' 10.25", more than five inches ahead of runner-up Jacob Keeling from Rhode Island to claim First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the event. He surpassed his own school record of 61' 6.25" set in 2007.
The Fordham men are in sixth place of ten teams after the first day while the women are seventh of 11 teams.
Charlotte leads the men's team competition with 50 points followed by Rhode Island (44), Temple (25), Saint Joseph's (20), Richmond (19), Fordham (16), Massachusetts (10), Saint Louis (5), Xavier (5) and La Salle (1).
On the women's side, Dayton leads the team competition with 51 points followed by Richmond (34), Rhode Island (28), Temple (27), Charlotte (27), Massachusetts (19), Saint Joseph's (12), Fordham (12), Xavier (8), Duquesne (6), La Salle (5) and Saint Louis (5).
Also scoring for the men were Chris Kozlowski, who placed eighth in the weight throw (47' 7.75") while the distance medley relay of Tom Finnerty, Brandon Ryan, Brian Schmidt and Brian Riley placed fourth in 10:11.26.
Scoring for the Fordham women on day one was Brigid Moriarty who was seventh in the 5000m (17:59.32).
Schmidt and Ryan both qualified for the 500m finals with Schmidt taking fifth in 1:05.05 and Ryan eighth in 1:07.44, while Finnerty qualified for the 1000m finals by placing eighth in the prelims (2:33.12).
Fordham also had one woman qualify for finals on day one as Kerri Gallagher placed second in the 1000m preliminaries in a time of 2:59.40.
Jeana Fletcher had a successful first day in the pentathlon competition for the Fordham women, winning the shot put (37' 10.5"), taking second in the long jump (16' 8.5") and placing fourth in the 55m hurdles (8.78), the high jump (5' 5.25" - season best) and the 800m (2:28.05).
On the first day of the heptathlon competition, Fordham's Vincent Servello placed sixth in the high jump (5' 7.75"), seventh in both the 55m dash (7.17) and long jump (18' 6.5") and eighth in the shot put (29' 8.25").
Also competing for the men were Christopher Lyons, who was tenth in the 400m preliminaries (51.15) and 13th in the 200m prelims (23.38), Ken Baron, who placed tenth in the pole vault (12' 9.5"), Matt Cardinale, who was 11th in the weight throw (41' 11.5"), Stephen Donnelly, who was 12th in the 1000m prelims (2:34.71), Brian Horowitz, Ryan Serkes and Kevin Fitzgerald, who placed 12th (1:57.52), 13th (1:57.55) and 14th (1:58.12), respectively, in the 800m preliminaries, Nick Delligatti, who was 14th in the 60m preliminaries (6.82 - season best) and 15th in the 200m prelims (23.49), Tim Hutchinson, who placed 15th in the 1000m prelims (2:35.82) and Tim Hartnett, who was 18th in the 5000m preliminaries (15:42.86).
Also competing for the women were Maggie McGowan, who finished 11th in the pole vault (9' 10"), Catherine Groene, who took 12th in the 400m preliminaries (1:00.37), Kelly Connolly, who was 12th in the 500m prelims (1:18.85), Sherilyn Groeninger, who was 13th in the 55m preliminaries (7.44 - season best) and 21st in the 200m prelims (27.26), Christine Willeford, who placed 15th in the 400m prelims (1:01.66) and 22nd in the 200m prelims (27.33), Elisabeth Warren, who was 15th in the long jump (16' 8.5"), 19th in the 55m prelims (7.62) and 20th in the 200m prelims (26.93), Dana Mitchell, who was 18th in the 500m prelims (1:22.23) and Kerry Kwalwasser, who was 20th in the 400m prelims (1:02.79).
The women's distance medley relay of Bridget Carroll, Kwalwasser, Mary LeSage and Jacqueline Prevete placed 11th in a time of 13:27.14.
The 2009 championship will conclude tomorrow at the University of Rhode Island with competition beginning at 9:00 a.m.
