The Fordham indoor track & field teams opened their 2009-10 season on Friday night, as they hosted the Fordham Season Opener in the Vincent T. Lombardi Center Fieldhouse. The Rams played host to Iona, St. John's, Fairleigh Dickinson, Mercy, Stony Brook, St. Peter's, and Providence. No team scores were kept.
In all, Fordham posted five individual event winners with four coming on the men's side. The wins started in the pole vault as Keegan Talty cleared 12' 1 ½" to win the event, while Sean Atkinson won the 400 meter dash in 50.7 seconds.
The Rams took first, second, and third in the 800 meters, as Brian Schmidt won in a time of 1:57.1, followed by Carter Ward (1:58.9) and Michael Rossi (1:59.8), respectively. Schmidt and Rossi would appear later in the 4x400 relay, as they joined Christopher Lyons and Sean Atkinson to finished second overall in a time of 3:31.4.
Vincent Servello rounded out the men's winners, taking first in the high jump, clearing 5' 10 ¾". Servello also took second in the pole vault (11' 7 ¾") and fifth in the triple jump (40' 11 ½").
Other top men's performances for Fordham came from Frank Massaro (2nd - 23.7) and Michael Bongiorno (3rd - 23.8) in the 200 meters, and Bernard Moore (2nd - 2:35.2) in the 1000 meters.
On the women's side, Courtnay Newman and Sherilyn Groeninger were the Rams' top performers. Newman won the high jump, clearing 5' 1", while also taking fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.5) and seventh in the shot put (33' 3"). Groeninger had a third place finish in the 200 meters (26.7) to go with a fifth place finish in the 60 meter dash (7.9). She also later helped the 4x400 relay to third place overall in 4:09.6.
Other top performances came from Kelly Connolly in the 400 meters (3rd - 1:00.4), Elisabeth Warren in the long jump (4th - 16' ¼") and Allison Bader in the triple jump (T2nd - 33' 1 ¾").
The Fordham track & field teams will next be in action on Friday, December 11th, as they host their second and final home meet, the Christmas Classic, beginning at 3:00 PM.
