Dec. 21, 2009

Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University men's basketball head coach Jared Grasso announced today that freshman Rayner Moquete will join the Rams' basketball team following the Christmas break.

"Rayner is a tough and skilled point guard whose international experience will be a great addition to our program," said Grasso. "We're very excited to have a quality student-athlete like Rayner join us at Fordham."

Moquete, a 6'1", 181-pound point guard who hails from the Dominican Republic, graduated from Our Savior New American School in Centereach, N.Y., last spring where he played for three years for head coach Rev. Ron Stelzer. As a senior in 2008-09, he averaged 15.0 ppg, 6.5 apg, 5.0 rpg and 2.0 steals/game, shooting better than 40% from the three-point arc and 74% from the free throw stripe.

As a junior at Our Savior New American, Moquete, a two-year captain, averaged 11.0 ppg, 4.0 apg, 4.0 rpg and 2.0 steals/game and shot over 40% from behind the arc.

A member of the New York Elite AAU program, Moquete also played with the Upstate Basketball program in the Reebok Summer Championships in Las Vegas along with Big East players Brandon Triche (Syracuse) and Dane Miller (Rutgers). He also had interest from Holy Cross, Duquesne, Georgia, and Niagara, and Davidson.

Moquete, who hails from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, also has international experience, serving as the starting point guard and captain of the Dominican Republic Junior National team. He played in tournaments in Spain, Columbia, Puerto Rico and Argentina with the national team while also attending the Adidas Nations camp in San Paulo, Brazil.

The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, December 23rd, as they travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia, to face James Madison University at 7:00 p.m. Following that game the players will have a few days off for Christmas break before returning to the Bronx to resume practice at which time Moquete will join them. He will be eligible to play in Fordham's game at Kennesaw State on Tuesday, December 29th.
