Charlotte, N.C. -
Following their 3-0 win last night, the Fordham women's soccer team will play in the Atlantic 10 semifinals against host Charlotte at 5:30 PM. The Rams will look to avenge an earlier loss to the 49ers, and hopefully repeat their 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship run, where they defeated Charlotte in the Atlantic 10 semifinals.
THE GAMES: Besides the Fordham-Charlotte match, the other Atlantic 10 semifinals will be between top-seeded Dayton and fifth-seeded Saint Louis, who defeated St. Bonaventure last night by a 3-0 score. The game is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
THE OPPONENTS: Among the teams that made the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament, Fordham posted a 2-2 record against those teams, as they defeated Massachusetts (3-2) and St. Bonaventure (2-0) and lost to Charlotte (4-0) and Dayton (2-0). Fordham did not face Saint Louis during the regular season.
PREVIOUS MEETING - CHARLOTTE 4, FORDHAM 0: Charlotte's Whitney Weinraub and Kirby Stenard each scored twice as the 49ers topped the Fordham Rams in an Atlantic 10 women's soccer match, 4-0 at Jack Coffey Field back on September 27th.
The 49ers got on the board quickly, scoring in the ninth minute as Whitney Weinraub found Kirby Stenard on the left side, who beat Fordham keeper Jen Byer to the right side of the net from 12 yards for her fourth of the season.
Weinraub then made it 2-0 in the 17th minute, as she beat a Fordham defender near the Fordham goal and scored to the lower left corner, her seventh tally of the year.
The score stayed that way until the 64th minute where Weinraub netted her second goal of the game on a cross from Jonna Handra.
The 49ers then closed out the scoring with Stenard's second goal of the game with Jenna McKeon and Sam Huecker picking up the assists.
For Fordham, Katie McDermott had a pair of shots, as the Rams were out shot 9-7 in the game, while Byer and Sarah Zieman split time in net.
THE CAPTAINS: For the 2009 season, senior Lauren Bustos and junior Katie McDermott will serve as the team's captains.
2009 ATLANTIC 10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS ANNOUNCED (11/4): The Atlantic 10 Conference announced the 2009 Women's Soccer All-Conference and All-Rookie teams this afternoon, with the Rams having three honorees. Senior defender Lauren Bustos and junior midfielder Katie McDermott were named First Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference, while freshman forward Annie Worden was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.
Bustos earns First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors for the second consecutive year, making her the second Fordham women's soccer player to do so, joining Denise Corrado, who was a First Team selection in 1995 and 1996. She was a part of a Fordham defense that registered eight shutouts this season, including six in conference play.
From another part of the Fordham defense, McDermott receives All-Atlantic 10 honors for the third consecutive season, the first Fordham women's soccer player to ever accomplish that feat. Receiving Second Team honors the past two seasons, she received First Team honors today, after registering two goals and two assists for six points this season.
Worden, a one-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week selection, was the Rams' second leading scorer this season with five goals and two assists for 12 points. She came on strong in conference play with a team-best four goals and ten points, as well as two game-winning goals.
MOVING UP: Three Fordham seniors found their way up the Rams' record book this season.
Senior Courtney Fedge has played in 76 games at Rose Hill, tying her for fourth all-time, while starting 68, which is tied for sixth at Fordham.
Senior Lauren Bustos heads into the Atlantic 10 Championship with 66 starts to her credit, which 11th at Fordham.
Senior goalkeeper Jen Byer moved into second place on the career shutouts list with 11 earlier this season, while remaining the Rams' career leader in goals against average at 1.03.
SCORING WHEN IT COUNTS: Senior Leah Loguidice has stepped in nicely as the Rams' top scoring forward this season, but her biggest impact is when she scores. She has four game-winning goals this season, which is tied for third in the Atlantic 10.
Not to be outdone is freshman Annie Worden, who scored her third game-winning goal on Thursday against Massachusetts.
FRESHMEN FIRSTS: Fordham freshman Rachel Suther became the first Ram freshman to record a shutout in her first career start against Army in the third game of the season.
Fellow freshman keeper Sarah Zieman later bettered that mark, as she posted three consecutive shutouts in her first three career starts. She was also rewarded with an Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week award on October 19th.
BALANCED ATTACK: Despite getting 12 goals from the combination on Leah Loguidice and Annie Worden, the Fordham Rams have plenty of scoring depth in 2009. So far, seven players other than Loguidice and Worden have scored a goal this season, while 12 of the 18 field players on the team have at least one point.
KEEPING IT CLEAN: Though fast and physical, the Fordham women's soccer teams ranks last in the Atlantic 10 in fouls (6.95 per game) and tied for last in cards with three.
