Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham University rowers competed in the Head of the Schuykill on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia on October 24th with the varsity 8 and the freshman 8 each placing sixth.
The Fordham heavyweight 8, which was competing in the championship race this year after previously competing in the club race, managed to finished in front of defending Atlantic 10 varsity 8 champs, Saint Joseph's, by almost 20 seconds. An entry from the Vesper Boat Club won the race in a time of 14:46.28, followed by Drexel, Navy, Rutgers, Connecticut and Fordham, who was edged out by UConn a the finish, placing 0.16 seconds behind the Huskies. The Rams did cross the line 20 seconds in front of Saint Joseph's as well as beating crews from Atlantic 10 rivals Temple and La Salle.
The varsity 8 was comprised of Alyssa Sunofsky, Stephanie Narduzzo, Francesca Andrea, Nadia Abdul ghani, Catherine Helmer, Lis Knips, Kayla Gaskey and Kate Branciforte with Christina Costa at coxswain
The freshman 8 also took sixth, of 29 crews, placing just under a second behind Army. Penn won the freshman 8 race followed by Villanova, Drexel, Saint Joseph's and Army, with Fordham sixth.
The Fordham Novice 8 was comprised of Elizabeth Anderson, Mary Ellen Shoup, Elizabeth Ayan, Alyssa Cantarella, Cara McGonigle, Colleen McGinnis, Jessica Cacace and julia LaFauci with Meghan Patenaude as coxswain.
