Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University women's tennis fans showed up at the Hawthorn-Rooney Courts expecting a tennis match. Instead, they got a marathon as Fordham's Bethany Boyle and Manhattan's Hilary Valenzuela engaged in a three-hour match that decided which team would win the match. Unfortunately for Ram fans Boyle came up short, falling to Valenzuela, 7-5, in the third set as Manhattan defeated Fordham, 4-3, on Sunday.

Valenzuela took the first set from Boyle, 7-5, before Boyle came back to win the second, 6-4, and force the third and deciding set. With all their teammates looking on, Boyle took a 4-3 lead in the third set before Valenzuela stormed back to win the set and the match by a score of 7-5.

The Rams opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. Taylor Holt and Bethany Boyle won at second doubles for the Rams over Manhattan's Morgan MacTaggart and Stephanie Tsao, 8-4, while Martina Featherston and Jennifer Mullen were victorious over Valenzuela and Christina Ton at third doubles by the same 8-4 score. Manhattan's Lili Johnson and Diana Lorentz took first doubles from Sarah Tremaine and Elizabeth Stall, 8-1.

Fordham took two singles matches with Stall winning at fourth singles over Christine Krasinski in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2, and Holt winning sixth singles from Tsao, taking the first set, 6-1, and leading in the second, 2-1, when Tsao retired with an injury.

In other singles matches, Tremaine fell at first singles to Johnson, 6-1 and 6-1, Featherston lost at second singles to Lorentz, 6-4 and 6-0, and Mullen was upended at fifth singles by Christina Puleo, 6-1 and 6-2.

The Rams will next be in action on Friday, October 9th, as they host Concordia College on the Hawthorn-Rooney Courts at 3:30 p.m.
