Bethlehem, Pa. - The Fordham University women's tennis team competed at the Lehigh Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, picking up a doubles win on Saturday and seven singles wins on Sunday, five of those over Marist.
The Saturday competition was limited to doubles action as weather forced play indoors. Fordham faced Delaware and Lehigh in doubles action, winning one of three matches from Lehigh while dropping all three doubles matches to Delaware. Sarah Tremaine and Martina Featherston picked up the win against Lehigh, defeating Julie Arthofer and Elizabeth Piscitelli, 9-8 (8-6 in the tiebreaker).
In singles play on Sunday, the Rams won all five matches played against Marist and two matches against Lehigh. Vesus Marist, Tremaine defeated Juliana Vilas-Boas in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2, while Taylor Holt also won in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0, over Jeannie Likin. Featherston dropped her first set to Kayla O'Donovan, 6-0, before winning the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (9-7), and then winning the third, 6-4. At the fourth position Jennifer Mullen won in straight sets over Joanna Malaluso, 6-1 and 6-1, as did Jane Carroll at the fifth spot over Abbey Perl, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-0.
Against Lehigh, Featherston won at the third position over Patricia Muething and Jennifer Mullen won at the fourth spot over Gena Levengood. Featherston took the first set from Muething, 6-3, before dropping the second, 6-4. But Featherston came back to win the tiebreaker, 10-4. Mullen won in straights sets, 6-4 and 6-4.
The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, October 28th, as they travel to Amherst, Massachusetts, to face the University of Massachusetts at 3:00 PM.
