Behind career-best performances from junior Ryan Hultman and sophomore Christian Flessner, the Fordham water polo team held on to defeat Queens College by a score of 11-10 at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center on Wednesday night.
With the win, Fordham improves to 9-12 overall, 2-1 in the CWPA Northern Division, while Queens College drops to 2-10 overall, 0-4 in the league.
Fordham opened the scoring with six goals in the first period to take a 6-3 lead after one. After Ali Arat made it 1-0 in favor of the Rams, Hultman took over with five goals in the period, which tied a career-high.
Hultman then surpassed that mark with three more tallies in the second period, but Queens College crept within two goals at 9-7 entering the half.
The Knights continued to close the gap in the third period, scoring an early goal to trail, 9-8. Queens then had an opportunity to tie the game on a penalty shot, but Flessner came up with the stop, keeping Fordham ahead by one.
After Hultman scored his ninth goal of the game to make it a 10-8 score, Srdan Milic and Doug Leresche scored for Queens to tie the game at ten with 19 seconds left in the period. That however was enough time for Mikey Edwards to score for Fordham with five seconds left, giving the lead back to Fordham.
In the final frame, Fordham put together some excellent defensive stops, highlighted by three saves by Flessner, as no one would score in the final frame, ending the game, 11-10 in favor of Fordham.
For the Rams, Hultman had a career-high nine goalsto go with two steals, while Scott Nemecek had a pair of assists and steals. Arat finished with a goal and two steals, while Jakob Muller ended up with three blocks, an assist, and a steal. In net, Flessner made a career-high 15 saves to go with a penalty block and a steal.
The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Saturday, October 17th, when they travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts for a pair of conference game. The Rams will take on Harvard at 1:30 PM and MIT at 5:30 PM.
