New York, N.Y. - It was back to work on Friday for the Fordham track & field teams, as the men and women competed at the Metropolitan Coaches' Invitational, held at the 168th St. Armory in New York. There were no team scores kept, but Fordham finished with a total of 26 top ten finishes between the men and women's squads, while having one school record fall.
In the women's pole vault, Fordham senior Maggie McGowan broke her own school record, clearing 10' 4", good for fifth overall in the competition. Her previous school record was 10' 0", set in 2006.
The Fordham relay teams also had solid performances at the Armory this evening. The men's distance medley relay team, comprised of Ryan Campi, Brian Schmidt, Ryan Serkes and Kevin Fitzgerald, won their event in a time of 10:31.56, while the men's 4x800 relay (Brian Horowitz, Tim Hutchinson, Stephen Donnelly, Thomas Kelly) was third overall in 8:03.17. The men's 1600 sprint medley relay (Fred Wertz, Nick Delligatti, Brandon Ryan, and Kelly) closed out the men's relay action with a fifth place finish in 3:39.05.
In the women's relays, the Rams' 4x800 relay, consisting of Kathleen Reilly, Dana Mitchell, Kelly Connolly, and Bridget Carroll, placed second in 9:55.49, while the 1600m sprint medley relay (Elisabeth Warren, Sherilyn Groeninger, Christine Willeford, and Kerri Gallagher) were third in 4:13.36.
Individually, seniors Matt DiBuono and Jeana Fletcher had multiple top ten finishes. DiBuono was the top collegian in the weight throw with a throw of 59' 1", while taking third in the shot put (47' 4 ½"). Fletcher was third in the high jump (5' 3"), fifth in the shot put (37' 3"), and tenth in the 60 meter hurdles final (9.75).
Other top men's performance came from Clifton Hilario, Hutchinson, Tom Finnerty, Donnelly, Tim Hartnett, Tom Papain, Jon Arnold, and Chris Kozlowski. Hilario was fourth in the 600 meters (1:21.35), while Hutchinson and Finnerty were fourth in the 800 meters (1:59.01) and the mile run (4:18.26), respectively. Donnelly was seventh in the 800 meters (2:00.55), with Hartnett and Papain finishing sixth (9:00.34) and seventh (9:01.32) in the 3000 meters. In the field events, Arnold was third in the long jump (22' 8 ½"), while Kozlowski was second in the shot put (47' 5").
Other top women's performances were put in by Carroll, Gallagher, Brigid Moriarty, Jacqueline Prevete, and Warren. Carroll was ninth in the 800 meters (2:28.52), while Gallagher took fourth in the mile (5:09.66). Moriarty and Prevete were second (10:32.11) and sixth (11:22.34) respectively in the 3000 meters with Warren taking sixth in the long jump (16' 8").
The Fordham track and field teams will next be in action on Saturday, January 10th, as they compete at the Yale College Invitational, held in New Haven, Connecticut, beginning at 9:00 AM.
