A superb weekend by the Fordham track & field team at the Terrier Invitational ended in the finest fashion on Saturday afternoon in Boston, Massachusetts. Not only did the Rams have five ECAC/IC4A qualifying times and nine season-best performances, but the oldest school mark in Fordham track & field record book also was broken by sophomore Jon Arnold.
Arnold won the long jump event by breaking the school record with a distance of 23' 8", surpassing the 1939 record of 23' 1", which was held by Ralph St. Pierre. The jump also qualified Arnold for the IC4A Championship later on this season.
Besides Arnold, Brian Schmidt and Clifton Hilario both qualified for the IC4A Championship in the 500 meters, as they finished in 10th and 14th, respectively, in the event. Schmidt ran a season-best time of 1:04.80, while Hilario ran 1:05.16. Brandon Ryan just missed making it a trio of qualifiers for the IC4A Championship, finishing 16th overall in 1:05.67, only 0.47 seconds off a qualifying time.
The final IC4A qualifier was the men's 4x400 relay, which finished seventh overall. The team of Ryan, Hilario, Christopher Lyons, and Schmidt ran 3:18.08. On top of the 4x400 relay, the distance medley relay improved their IC4A qualifying time from last week by placing fourth overall, as Hilario, Lyons, Paul Szczepaniak, and Brian Riley ran a season-best time of 10:15.34.
In the women's competition, the women's 4x800 relay, consisting of Kathleen Reilly, Kerri Gallagher, Kelly Connolly, and Catherine Groene, qualified for the ECAC Championship, as they finished fifth overall in a time of 9:19.10.
The 4x400 relay also had a solid performance, as Christine Willeford, Elisabeth Warren, Connolly, and Groene finished 11th overall in a season-best time of 3:57.97.
Warren almost gave the Rams two record breakers on the weekend, as she ran 7.54 seconds in the 55 meter dash, which was just one tenth of a second of the hand time school record set in 1990. Warren also ran a season-best time of 26.27 seconds in the 200 meters.
Reilly also ran a season-best time in the 500 meters, as she placed 25th overall in 1:18.72.
The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on Thursday, January 29th, as they compete at the 2009 Metropolitan Championship, held at the 168th St. Armory, beginning at 1:00 PM.
