New Haven, Conn. - Following a solid performance yesterday, the Fordham track & field teams competed on Saturday at the Yale Collegiate Invitational in New Haven, Connecticut. There were no team scores kept, but Fordham has 20 top ten finishes, which included one event win and three second place finishes.
Senior Matt DiBuono was the lone event winner, taking the weight throw with a mark of 59' 6 ¼". He also finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 45' 10 ¾".
Junior Catherine Groene was second overall and the top collegian in the women's triple jump, as she put down a season-best mark of 37' 3". Sophomore Jon Arnold and senior Tom Finnerty each placed second in their respective events. Arnold was second in the long jump with a mark of 22' 6 ½", while Finnerty was runner-up in the 3000 meters in 8:32.87.
The Rams also got season-best performances in the men's 800 meters, the women's 400 meters, and the women's 800 meters. Senior Ryan Serkes ran 1:57.49 in the 800 men's meters, which was good for seventh overall, while senior Kathleen Reilly ran 1:01.37 in the women's 400 meters, which was 15th overall. Sophomore Kerri Gallagher rounded out the season-best performances with a seventh place finish in the women's 800 meters in 2:19.53.
Other top performers included freshman Kevin Fitzgerald and junior Paul Szczepaniak, as they ended up sixth (4:30.06) and seventh (4:30.43), respectively in the 800 meters, while freshman Stephen Donnelly was ninth in that event (4:35.27). On the women's side, senior Brigid Moriarty was sixth in the mile (5:19.94), while senior Maggie McGowan placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing 10' 0". Senior Jeana Fletcher wrapped up the top individual performances with three top tens in the high jump (7th - 4' 11"), the 60 meter hurdles (7th - 9.58), and the long jump (9th - 16' 1 ¾").
In the relays, the men's 4x800 team (Fitzgerald, Tim Hutchinson, Szczepaniak, Ryan Campi) placed sixth in 8:09.31, while the 4x400 team (Brandon Ryan, Clifton Hilario, Serkes, Brian Schmidt) was seventh in 3:23.97. The lone women's relay was the 4x400 (Kelly Connolly, Reilly, Elisabeth Warren, Gallagher), which placed sixth in 4:05.04.
The Fordham track and field teams will next be in action on Friday, January 16th, as they compete at the NYU Gotham Cup, held 168th St. Armory, beginning at 1:00 PM.
