Looking for a Philadelphia sweep in the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 play, the Fordham volleyball team came up short against the Temple Owls, as Temple's Yun Yi Zhang recorded a match-high 21 kills to lead the Owls to a 3-0 victory over the Rams at McGonigle Hall. Set scores were 25-18, 25-22, and 27-25.
With the loss Fordham goes to 10-7 overall, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple improves to 9-6 overall, 2-0 in league play.
Temple jumped out to a 2-0 set lead, hitting .345 and .393 in the first two sets respectively. In set three, Fordham played even with the Owls, as the set was tied at 24. The Rams then got set point, following a kill by Jenna Hart, 25-24. Temple though got three straight kills from Yun Yi Zhang to take set three, 27-25.
For Fordham, Kailee May had a team-high 11 kills to go with nine digs, while Katie Wells had eight kills and five blocks. Katherine Burrell added a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs, with Sara Friede and Christi Griffiths each having seven kills.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Wednesday, October 1st, as they play at Seton Hall, beginning at 7:00 PM.
