West Point, N.Y. - Fordham University senior Dominique Liguori defeated Army's Anne Houghton in straight sets to win the first singles title at the 2008 Eastern Collegiate Invitational at the United States Military Academy.

Liguori, who entered the tournament as the number one seed at first singles, took the first set from Houghton, the number two seed, 6-3 and then wrapped up the championship with a 6-2 win in the second set.

Liguori advanced to the finals with a straight set victory over UMBC's Ana Mungro in the semifinals on Saturday. Liguori won the first set 6-2 and led the second set, 1-0, before Mungro had to retire due to injury.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Liguori defeated Pittsburgh's Minh Evans, the number five seed, in the quarterfinals in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1.

On the first day of action, Liguori received a first round bye before taking a three-game set from UMass' Candyce Boney, dropping the first set, 7-6 (5), before coming back to win the second set, 6-4, forcing a tie-breaker which she won 10-7.

The Fordham women's tennis squad will next be in action on Saturday, October 4th, as they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to compete against Marist and Albany in the Marist Invitational.
