Fordham's Dominique Liguori, the number one seed at first singles, defeated Massachusetts' Candyce Boney to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2008 Eastern Collegiate Invitational being held at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
After receiving a first round bye, Liguori dropped the first set to Boney, 7-6 (5), before coming back to win the second set, 6-4, forcing a tie-breaker which she won 10-7. Liguori will now face Pittsburgh's Minh Evans, the number five seed, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Also competing in singles competition for the Rams were Martina Featherston, Sarah Tremaine and Bethany Boyle. Featherston fell in the round of 16 at second singles to Fairfield's Paulina Rys, 6-0 and 6-1, while Tremaine was upended in the first round of third singles by Vanja Lakic of Niagara, 6-2 and 6-1. Boyle, the third seed at fourth singles, won her first match of the day, defeating Stony Brook's Emily Gevins in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1, before falling to Seton Hall's Belfin Sunbul in the round of 16, 6-0 and 6-1.
In doubles play, Jane Carroll and Kathryn Silva teamed up to compete at first doubles where they fell to Natalia Christenson and Emilia Monell of Columbia, 8-3. Alissa Roman and Brittany Russell also competed in doubles play for Fordham, dropping a second doubles match to Niagara's Emma Cunnington and Andrea Janes, 8-2.
