Water Polo Earns Two Wins On Day One of Fordham Invitational

Bronx, N.Y. - Day one at the Fordham Water Polo Invitational is complete, as eight games were played on Saturday with host Fordham, the Univ. of Toronto, and the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) all winning two games on the day.

Here's a breakdown of each game:

Game 1 - Mercyhurst 10, Queens 4

Mercyhurst had four players notch two goals apiece, while Andy Sekulski made six saves in net, as the Lakers topped Queens College, 10-4. Mercyhurst's Kane Ashton, Jake Coin, Alex Moggridge, and Andrew Schonhoff each had two goals, while Jorge Montero and Oscar Calderon had the final two tallies.

For Queens, Pearce Selleck had two goals, while Camilo Bedoya and Guilherme Cordovil each had one. Jason Shotnell had six saves in net.

Game 2 - Mt. San Antonio 15, Asphalt Green 6

Mt. San Antonio's Shane Hunter, Mikey Edwards, and Will Brown each had three goals, as they topped the Asphalt Green Club, 15-6. Terrence Tsai made ten saves for Mt. San Antonio, while Dave McMillan, Steve Gonzalez (2), Wesley Yao, Chris Hernandez, and Anthony Wade each had one tally. Asphalt Green was led by Paul Milunec's two goals, while Kerry Kellogg made seven saves.

Game 3 - Univ. of Toronto 9, Navy "B" 6

Toronto's Ryan Speers netted three goals, while Trevor Robinson made 12 saves in net, as the Varsity Blues topped Navy "B", 9-6. Besides Speers, Tanner Regan and Milos Radojcic each had two goals, with Ryan Pallet and Chaz Ilhan finishing the scoring. For Navy "B", Jason Peck had two goals, with Scott Simeral, Robert Newman, Chris Vahey, and Darren McKay each having one. In net, Dominic Valentini had seven saves.

Game 4 - Fordham 11, Mercyhurst 8

After building a 5-0 lead in the first period, the Fordham Rams held on for an 11-8 win over Mercyhurst. Fordham's Alex Powell was the scoring star with five goals and two assists, while Ryan Hultman had three goals, an assist, and four steals. Todd Conway added two goals and an assist with Jakob Muller having a goal and an assist. In net, Timmy Will made ten saves and added four steals.

Mercyhurst's Andrew Schonhoff had three goals, while Jorge Montero added two. Kane Ashton, Oscar Calderon, and Alex Moggridge wrapped up the Lakers' scoring.

Game 5 - NYAC 18, Asphalt Green 2

The NYAC got five goals from Feghove and four from Rosalyn for a one-sided win over Asphalt. Brendan Beer and Benny Ladanyi had the Asphalt goals, while Kerry Kellog has 12 saves in net.

Game 6 - Univ. of Toronto 12, Queens 8

In a heated contest, the Varsity Blues got four goals from Ryan Speers and three from Max Pottier and Milos Radojcic to defeat Queens College, 12-8. Trevor Robinson made a total of 10 saves in the match for Toronto with Brook Ruffo and Chaz Ilhan each having a tally. For Queens, Jason Shotwell made 12 saves in net, while Matthew Degorio, Jacob McCommons, Pearce Selleck, and Josh Tatro each had two goals.

Game 7 - NYAC 15, Navy "B" 9

Feghove had six goals for the NYAC while Kelsch added four, as they led the NYAC to their second win of the day with a 15-9 win over Navy "B". For Navy "B", Chris Vahey and Robert Newman each had two goals, while Stephen Hicks, Kyle McGhie, Matt Carlson, Jeff Davis, and Conor Handley each had one.

Game 8 - Fordham 9, Mt. San Antonio 7

Trailing 3-0 in the first period, the Fordham Rams rallied for a 9-7 win over Mt. San Antonio, bringing their record to 5-3 on the season. Down 7-6 in the third period, Scott Nemecek scored with 16 seconds left in the third period to knot the game at seven. In the fourth, Ryan Hultman and Andrew Dentinger both scored to seal the come-form-behind victory.

Overall, Hultman had three goals in the match, while Dentinger had two goals and four assists. Luke Forand also added two goals with Andrew McKernin and Nemecek capping the scoring. Timmy Will was outstanding in net, making 13 saves to go with two steals.

Day two of the Fordham Invitational will begin at 8:00 AM on Sunday, September 20th, at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center with the final match to be played at 4:10 PM.
