The Fordham women's soccer team had a tough task on Friday night, as they played the ninth-ranked Duke Blue Devils, who averaged over 3.5 goals and 18.6 shots per game heading into the opener of the Duke/adidas Classic. Well throughout the game, the Rams played right with Duke, but eventually fell by a 2-0 count.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 3-2-1 overall, while Duke improves to 7-1-1.
The Rams held Duke under both of their offensive averages, allowing two goals and 13 shots on the night.
Duke put Fordham under the gun first in the tenth minute with the first scoring opportunity, as Duke leading scorer Elisabeth Redmond put forth the first shot of the game with Jen Byer coming up with the save.
Duke however would score the first goal of the game in the 20th minute, as KayAnne Gummersall connected on a give and go with Kelly Hathorn, netting her sixth goal of the season from eight yards out.
Fordham then registered four of the next six shots in the contest, as they tried to tie the match. Katie McDermott and Michelle Ancelj each had a shot in that span, which Cassidy Powers came up with the save on both.
Duke ended up with a 6-4 shot advantage in the period, and ended the half up 1-0.
In the second half, Katie Sanchez had the first two chances for Fordham, pushing two shots wide in the first ten minutes of play.
Duke then put on the pressure over the final eight minutes, scoring at the 86:59 mark for a 2-0 lead. Off a Redmond corner kick, Cody Newman came up with the ball in a scramble and punched in her third goal of the season.
Overall, Duke out shot Fordham, 13-8, in the game, as Powers made two saves for the shutout, while Jen Byer had five saves for the Rams.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action at the Duke/adidas Classic on Sunday, September 21st, as they play third-ranked North Carolina, beginning at noon.
