Philadelphia, Pa. -
The Atlantic 10 Conference announced the 2008 Women's Soccer Preseason All-Conference and All-Rookie teams this afternoon, with the Rams being well represented. Three women's soccer players, senior Kim Boulos (Croton, N.Y./Croton Harmon), junior Courtney Fedge (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport), and sophomore Katie McDermott (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) were named to the Preseason All-Conference team, while freshman Mariella Romano (Whitestone, N.Y./Townsend Harris) was named to the Preseason All-Rookie Team.
After transferring from South Carolina, Boulos made an immediate impact as a Second Team All-Conference and Second Team NSCAA All-Northeast Region selection last fall, leading the Rams with six goals, which all came in Atlantic 10 conference play. She posted two game-winning goals and 12 points, both good for second on the team.
Fedge, a First Team NSCAA All-Northeast Region and Second Team All-Conference selection last fall, helped Fordham post a single season best 0.84 goals against average, which included seven shutouts. Offensively, she posted two goals and three assists for seven points.
McDermott, a Second Team All-Conference and All-Rookie Team selection last fall, stepped into the line-up immediately in her first season, playing in all 20 games, starting 19. She was the top freshman scorer on the Rams with four goals and two assists for ten points, while helping the Rams' defense record seven shutouts. She was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship team, as Fordham advanced to the championship game for the second straight year, while also garnering Third Team NSCAA All-Northeast Region.
Romano, a 5-3 midfielder, was a four-year varsity soccer player at Townsend Harris High School. While there, she earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2004 and the Coaches Award in 2005. For club soccer, Romano played for the Long Island Rough Riders, helping them to three straight league championships from 2004-06, and currently plays for the Rockville Centre Royals. A member of NYS ODP from 2003-07, she was selected to the Region 1 Team four times (2003-04, 2006-07), and was a part of the National Team Event Invite in Boca Raton, Florida in 2005. She was also a member of the Super Y-League National Pool from 2004-06.
The Fordham Women's Soccer team is coming off their second straight runner-up finish at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship. The team finished the year at 10-5-5 overall, 7-1-3 in the Atlantic 10, and posted their highest regional ranking in team history. The Fordham women's soccer team is slated to open their 2008 fall season at home on Sunday, August 31st, against Iona College, beginning at 1:00 PM.
