Despite chilly conditions and intermittent periods of rain, Fordham junior Matt DiBuono successfully defended his hammer throw title on Saturday at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Men's & Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held at the Track & Field Complex on the campus of the University of Massachusetts.
DiBuono won the competition with a season-best throw of 197' 3", bettering his own school record of 196' 9" set earlier this year. DiBuono had already qualified for both the IC4A Championship and NCAA Regionals in the event.
Vying for its seventh men's title in eight years, defending champion Rhode Island leads the men's team competition with 75 points after seven events. Charlotte is second with 51 points, followed by Duquesne (36), Massachusetts (25) and La Salle (25), Fordham (17), Temple (14), Richmond (14), Saint Joseph's (nine) and Xavier (four).
After eight events, Rhode Island leads the women's Championship with a total of 53.5 points, while Dayton is second with 51.5 points. Two-time defending champion Charlotte is third with 47points, followed by Massachusetts (29) and La Salle (29), Temple (25), Richmond (23), Duquesne (17.5), Xavier (13), Saint Louis (9.5), Saint Joseph's (eight) and Fordham (six).
DiBuono also scored in the discus for the men, placing sixth with a season-best toss of 146' 2" while Brian Mulkeen also scored, placing eighth in the hammer with a season-best throw of 151' 10".
The men's 4x800 relay also contributed to the team scoring, taking third in a time of 7:36.99.
Also competing for the Rams on day one were Chris Kozlowski, who placed ninth in the discus (127' 11"), Vito Scalia, who was tenth in the hammer (141' 6"), Fred Wertz, who placed 14th in the 100m preliminaries (11.73) and Justin Kopunek, who was 16th in the 3000m steeplechase (9:59.95).
In the men's decathlon, Augustus Gleason sits in ninth place with 2,691 points after day one while Vincent Servello is in eleventh with 2,485. Gleason's top performance came in the 400m where he placed sixth in a time of 53.61 while Servello's top finish was an eighth place showing in the long jump (17' 6").
On the women's side, Brigid Moriarty was the lone individual scorer for the Rams, placing fifth in the 10,000m in a season-best time of 37:12.93 while the 4x800 relay also scored, taking seventh in a time of 9:17.69.
Also competing for the women were Catherine Groene, who was eleventh in the preliminaries of the 100m hurdles (16.15) and 16th in the long jump (16' 1.75"), Jacqueline Prevete, who placed 12th in the 10,000m (38:28.58), Ondrea Gallo, who placed 13th in the preliminaries of the 100m hurdles (16.15) Christine Willeford, who was 16th in the 100m preliminaries (13.38), Sherilyn Groeninger, who was 20th in the 100m preliminaries (13.58).
Action commences at 8:45am on Sunday, May 4, with the 110m hurdles in the men's decathlon, followed by the women's javelin at 9:00am.
