Fordham's Jennifer Daniels, Caroline Gibbons & Stephanie Narduzzo Named 2008 CRCA National Scholar-Athletes

Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University senior Caroline Gibbons (College Point, N.Y./Dominican Academy), junior Jennifer Daniels (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) and sophomore Stephanie Narduzzo (East Amherst, N.Y./East Amherst) were named National Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) it was announced today. The award recognizes student-athletes with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher that competed in 75 percent of her team's 2008 spring races. Also, the student-athletes must be upperclassmen (sophomore, junior or senior) in terms of eligibility and their head coaches must be good standing members of the CRCA.

A total of 427 student-athletes from 99 different schools were honored for their efforts during the 2008 season.

This is the second consecutive year in which Daniels and Gibbons have been honored by the CRCA while it is the first scholar-athlete award for Narduzzo.

Daniels, a Mathematics major, and Narduzzo, a Business Administration major, are members of the Fordham Lightweight 4, which won a silver medal at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship and have qualified for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships to be held on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J., on June 6 and 7.

The pair also rowed with the Junior Varsity 8 which won the petite final at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship.

Gibbons, an American Studies major who is four-year member of the women's rowing team, holds the highest GPA of any senior student-athlete in Fordham College. She was the coxswain for the women's Varsity 8, which won both the fall and spring Metropolitan Championships and took sixth at the Atlantic 10 championship. Gibbons also served as the coxswain for the Lightweight 4 which won a silver medal at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship.

For her academic and athletic accomplishments, Gibbons received the 2008 John Kieran Award. The Kieran Award, presented to the Fordham College senior athlete who has made significant academic and athletic contributions. The award honors the memory of John Kieran, Fordham College Class of 1912, and a famous radio broadcaster, sports editor of the New York Times and a member of Baseball's Hall of Fame. She also is the 2008 recipient of the Orestes Brownson Award for excelling as an American Studies major and has been elected to Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Honor Society of Students in Jesuit Colleges and University.

All three were also named Academic All-Atlantic 10 this past fall, the third straight year Gibbons was honored by the A-10 and the second consecutive year for Daniels.
