Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham's women's varsity eight scored an easy victory over five opponents in the 2008 Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association's Spring Championships at Orchard Beach Lagoon on April 26th. The Rams seized control of the race early in waters that were made choppy by a cross-wind from Long Island Sound, then pulled away to a decisive win in the flat waters of the second half of the race, defeating Binghamton by more than 10 seconds. Army, Fairfield, Sacred Heart and Albany completed the field.

The second varsity had an even more impressive race. The Rams finished more than 13 seconds ahead of Binghamton, who claimed the silver medal by less than a second over Army. Sacred Heart trailed well astern.

The women's novice eight suffered a broken wheel and finished well behind in their early afternoon heat, failing to qualify for the final.

After the regatta, the entire team and all the parents and alumni in attendance gathered for a reception at the home of Fordham Hall of Famer Sue Veteri Woods, CBA `92 and her husband, Brian, who live about two miles from the Orchard Beach Lagoon. It was a fine way to end a very successful day of racing with excellent food and drink and many good stories of the day's highlights, as well as tales of years gone by.

Next week the Fordham crews travel to the Occoquan Reservoir in Northern Virginia for the Mid-Atlantic Championships on Sunday, May 4th, in their final tune-up before the Dad Vail Regatta.
