The Fordham track & field teams had an extremely successful day at the 2008 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships, as the men won the team competition, while the women finished second behind St. John's. Individually, Fordham junior Matt DiBuono was named Athlete of the Meet.
The Fordham men won the Metropolitan Championship with a team score of 193, followed by LIU (120), Southern Connecticut State (117), Wagner (107), FDU (86), St. Francis (57), Marist (37), Manhattan (16).
DiBuono won two events and took second in another to win Athlete of the Meet honors for the men. He won the hammer throw with a toss of 59.98m, bettering his NCAA qualifying mark set earlier this season, as well as the discus throw (44.31m). He also took second in the shot put with a mark of 14.77m.
Tom Finnerty also won an event, taking the 1500 meters in 3:59.76, while anchoring the 4x800 relay team to a victory in 7:51.39, along with Brian Horowitz, Matt Lowenthal, and Ryan Serkes.
The men's 4x400 relay, consisting of Brandon Ryan, Clifton Hilario, Michael Kearney, and Brian Schmidt, won their event in a season-best time of 3:17.76. Schmidt also added a third place finish in the 800 meters in a season-best time of 1:53.79, while Kearney scored in the 200 (5th) and 400 (6th) meter events.
Other top three finishes included Chris Kozlowski in the shot put (3rd - 14.38m), Augustus Gleason in the pole vault (2nd - 2.75m), and Vincent Servello in the triple jump (3rd - 12.04m).
The Fordham women were second with 144 points behind only St. John's 158 points. Southern Connecticut State was third (129), followed by Wagner (128), LIU (96), FDU (60), Marist (46), and St. Francis (6).
Leading the way for the Fordham, Melissa Salerno and Brigid Moriarty were both dual event winners.
Moriarty won the 5,000 meter run in 18:30.77, and then captured the 10,000 meter run in 38:18.92.
Salerno won the 800 meters in a season-best time of 2:14.44, and then captured the 1500 meters in 4:38.41. She topped off the day by helping the 4x800 relay team (Dana Mitchell, Salerno, Bridget Carroll, and Kerri Gallagher) to a first place finish in a season-best time of 9:18.49.
Right behind Salerno and Moriarty's performance, Catherine Groene had three second place finishes in the 400 hurdles (1:04.27), long jump (5.37m), and triple jump (11.30m), while also scoring in the 100 hurdles (6th).
Jacqueline Prevete and Jeana Fletcher were also multiple event scorers. Prevete was second in the 10,000 meters (39:40.33) and fourth in the 5,000 meters (19:18.64), while Fletcher was third in the high jump (1.65m), fifth in the shot put (11.34m), and fifth in the javelin throw (29.91m)
The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on April 24-26, as they compete at the Penn Relays, held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
