The Fordham University men's and women's outdoor track and field squads competed today at the eighth annual Coach "O" Invitational held at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. There was no team scoring.
The Rams had two event winners on the day as Melissa Salerno took the women's mile in 5:13.15, seven seconds ahead of the runner-up, while Matt DiBuono was victorious in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.81m, ten meters better than the second-place finisher. DiBuono also placed sixth in teh discus (42.23m) seventh in the shot put (12.49m).
Additionally, the women's 4x400 A relay team also won their event in a season-best time of 4:00.66.
Also placing in the top three for the women were Jana Trenk, who was second in the 5000m in a time of 20:17.58; Catherine Groene, who placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.19m; Kathleen Reilly, who took second in the 800m in a season-best time of 2:19.09; Brigid Moriarty, who finished second in the 3000m with a season-best time of 10:21.51 and Maggie McGowan, who was second in the pole vault with a vault of 2.70m.
Finishing in the top ten for the women were Catherine Groene, who took fourth in the 100m hurdles (15.63 - season-best) and sixth in the 400m (59.69 - season-best); Ondrea Gallo, who was fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:09.28) and eighth in the 100m hurdles (16.94); Jeana Fletcher, who took fifth in the javelin (27.91m) and seventh in the shot put (10.01m); Bridget Carroll, who finished sixth in the 800m (2:22.46); Jacqueline Prevete, who placed sixth in the 3000m (10:49.09); Natazia Fistrovic, who was seventh in the javelin (26.85) and Christine Willeford, who was ninth in the 100m (13.09).
In women's relays, the 4x100 team placed fourth (51.35) while the 4x400 B team placed fifth (4:11.10)
Chris Kozlowski and Tim Hartnett were the only other males to finish in the top three for Fordham, with Kozlowski placing third in the shot put with a toss of 13.65m and Hartnett placing third in the 5000m in a time of 16:13.51.
The Rams were well represented in the hammer with DiBuono winning the event and Brian Mulkeen (45.44m), Vito Scalia (44.02) and Kozlowski (43.70) taking fourth through sixth, respectively.
Other men who placed in the top ten included Brian Horowitz, who took fourth in the 800m (1:58.50); Justin Kopunek, who placed fourth in the 5000m (16:13.91); Ryan Campi, who was fifth in the 800m (1:58.64); Doug Petrullo, who finished seventh in the javelin (44.37m); Clifton Hilario, who was eighth in the 400m (50.33); Tim Hutchinson, who finished eighth in the 800m (1:58.84); Casey Barrett, who took eighth in the 3000m (9:14.59); Andrew Spanos, who placed ninth in the mile (4:35.80) and Vincent Servello, who was ninth in the javelin (43.40).
In men's relays, the 4x400 A team placed second (3:18.93 - season-best) while the 4x100 was seventh (44.72) as was the 4x400 B team (3:28.05).
The men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will next be in action on Monday as they compete at the St. John's Monday Night Meet.
