The Fordham men's and women's outdoor track and field squads competed at the Southern Connecticut State University Relays on Saturday with each team placing fifth. The men placed fifth of 12 teams while the women were fifth of eleven teams.
The Rams had three individual winners and one relay winner on the day as Clifton Hilario and Melissa Salerno each captured the 800m while Catherine Groene was victorious in the triple jump and the women's 4x400 relay also placed first.
Rhode Island won the men's team title with a score of 148 followed by Southern Connecticut (113), Yale (68.5), Boston College (60) with Fordham and Manhattan finishing in a tie for fifth with 44 points.
Southern Connecticut took the women's team competition with a score of 135, followed by Boston College (102.5), Manhattan (85.5), Yale (84) and Fordham (52).
Salerno won the 800m in a time of 2:19.46, 0.54 seconds ahead of Boston College's Siobhan Breagy while Groene took the triple jump competition with a leap of 37' 11.25", over two and a-half feet better than Manhattan's Cara Hessels. Groene also scored in the 100m hurdles, placing fourth in a time of 16.43 seconds.
In the women's 4x400 relay, Fordham teams took the top two spots with the A team winning the event in a time of 4:07.50, just over seven seconds in front of the Fordham B team.
Other women scoring for the Rams included Jeana Fletcher, who tied for third in the high jump (5' 1"); Maggie McGowan, who took fourth in the pole vault (9' 0.25"); Ondrea Gallo, who was fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:10.92); Bridget Carroll, who placed sixth in the 800m (2:24.62) and Madeline Weingart, who finished fifth in the javelin (87' 4").
The Fordham women's 4x100 relay of Carroll, Caitlin Doherty, Catalina Hallock and Dana Mitchell took third in a time of 54.32.
Also scoring for the men were Tom Finnerty and Matt Lowenthal, who placed second (4:00.75) and third (4:02.10), respectively, in the 1500m and Matt DiBuono, who took second in the hammer with a toss of 188' 3".
In men's relays, the Rams took two of the top four spots in the 4x400 with the A team placing second (3:23.98) and the B squad taking fourth (3:31.92). The Fordham 4x100 relay team placed fourth in 45.82.
The men's and women's outdoor track and field squads will next be in action on Monday night at the St. John's Monday Meet beginning at 4:30 p.m.
