Kingston, R.I. - Dominique Liguori won at first singles in straight sets over Rhode Island's Nyssa Peele, 6-0 and 6-2, but that would be the only point won by Fordham as the women's tennis squad fell to Rhode Island, 6-1, at Rhode Island on Saturday. With the loss, Fordham falls to 4-7 on the year while Rhode Island improves to 11-5.
Fordham opened the match by losing the doubles point, dropping two of three matches to Rhode Island. Liguori and Ellenoira Featherston teamed to take first doubles for Fordham from Rhode Island's Valerie Chacon and Christen Cadigan, 8-5, but Martina Featherston and Catherine Kellner fell at second doubles to Peele and Grace Hedstrom, 8-3, and Brittany Russell and Elizabeth Stall lost at third doubles to Amanda Barletta and Kristen Liu, 8-1.
In singles action, Rhode Island won at the second through sixth spots. Catherine Kellner fell to Cadigan at second singles, dropping the first set, 6-4, before coming back to win the second set, 6-3, but eventually falling in the tie-breaker, 10-7. Ellenoira Featherston dropped third singles to Hedstrom (6-3, 6-3), Martina Featherston lost at fourth singles to Barletta (6-2, 6-0), Stall fell to Chacon at fifth singles (6-0, 6-2) and Russell was denied at sixth singles by Liu (6-1, 6-1).
Fordham will next be in action on Sunday, March 30th, as the Rams host Stony Brook on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts at 12:00 p.m. and then Saint Joseph's University at 4:00 p.m.
