Bronx, N.Y. -
The 2007 Fordham University football Rams were named one of the most improved teams according to Somisports.com. They rated the Rams as the fourth most improved team in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and the 19th most improved in all of college football for the 2007 season.
Picked to finish sixth in the seven-team Patriot League after going 3-8 in 2006, the Rams rebounded under second-year head coach Tom Masella, the 2007 Patriot League Coach of the Year. Last fall, the Rams went 8-4 overall, including a 6-1 conference record as Fordham won its second Patriot League title.
With the Patriot League championship came a berth in the NCAA Football Championships where the Rams gave seventh-ranked Massachusetts all it could handle, tying the game at 35 in the fourth quarter before falling, 49-35.
At the beginning of the season, Masella's Rams established three goals for the season: regain control of the Liberty Cup from Columbia, win the Patriot League championship and practice on Thanksgiving Day, meaning Fordham would win the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Championships. And they accomplished all three, defeating Columbia, 27-10, on September 15th and then checking off the other two goals with a 24-21 win over Holy Cross on November 3rd, a win which clinched the Patriot League title and the automatic bid.
On the FCS level, Dayton was named the most improved followed by Georgia Southern, Eastern Washington and Fordham.
