Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Towson

Towson, Md. - The Fordham track & field team opened their outdoor season this afternoon at the Towson Invitational in Towson, Md. The Rams took home seven first places finishes and five second place finishes on the day. No team scores were kept.

The Rams started with a win in the men's hammer throw as Matt DiBuono captured the event with an NCAA Regional qualifying throw of 195' 6". DiBuono was also Fordham's top finisher in the shot put (5th - 46' 3 ½") and discus throw (4th - 129' 9").

Catherine Groene matched that success on the women's side, winning the triple jump event at 38' 6 ¾", while taking sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.00) and fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:06.26).

In the middle distance events, Clifton Hilario, Brian Schmidt, and Ryan Serkes each had a top three finish. Hilario was second in the 400 meters in 50.90 seconds, while Schmidt (1:59.12) and Serkes (1:59.91) took second and third respectively in the 800 meters. Not to be outdone, Christine Willeford placed third in the women's 400 meters in 1:02.95.

In the 1500 meters, Fordham took first in both the men's and women's events. Melissa Salerno took the first 1500 meters in 4:42.46, while Matt Lowenthal followed with a win in 4:00.58.

In the distance events, Fordham began with a third place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase, behind John Korevec in 10:30.28. Tom Finnerty then won the men's 5000 meters in 15:08.43, while Kelsey Komich was fourth in the women's 5000 meters in 19:47.81. In the 10,000 meters, Brigid Moriarty and Jacqueline Prevete were the top two women's finishers in 38:03.67 and 38:13.13, respectively.

Finally, Fordham finished out the day in the 4x400 relay. The men's "A" relay was first in 3:22.85, followed by the "B" team in second (3:31.27), while the women's "A" relay was second in 4:01.74.

The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on Saturday, March 29th, as they compete at the Southern Connecticut Relays in New Haven, Conn., beginning at 9:00 AM.
