Wilmington, N.C. -
For the third time in the four-game series at UNC Wilmington, the Fordham Rams jumped out to an early lead only to see it disappear as the Rams dropped the fourth game of the series to the Seahawks, losing 9-4 on Brooks Field as UNC Wilmington completed the four-game sweep.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 0-5 on the year while UNC Wilmington improves to 5-4.
The Rams jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four-run first. With one out, Rich Goulian walked and moved to second on an Eric Reese single. After the two base runners pulled off a double steal, Chris Kaible delivered them with a single to right. Ryan McCrann followed with his first home run of the year to put Fordham up 4-0.
Unfortunately, those would be the only runs and hits the Rams would record on the day as four UNC Wilmington pitchers combined to shut the Fordham bats down the rest of the game, allowing no hits and striking out seven.
The Seahawks picked up a run in the bottom of the third, on a Jason Appel RBI double, and then took a commanding 8-4 lead with a seven-run sixth. Alex Hill led off the frame for Wilmington drawing a walk off Fordham starter Jake Rabinowitz before Andrew Davis came on in relief for the Rams. After Hill moved to second on a wild pitch, Nate Hall walked, putting runners on first and second. Cody Stanley moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt and Jes Snyder followed with a single to plate Hill. A single from Mike Rooney loaded the bases and Rhett Miller walked to force in Hall and make it a 4-3 game. Daniel Hargrave was then hit by a pitch, bringing in pinch runner Marc Locklear to knot the game and Ryan Sheflott came on to relief Davis. Mark Carver greeted Sheflott with a two-run single and then Hill drilled a two-run double to left to put the Seahawks up 8-4.
Wilmington added another run in the seventh to make it a 9-4 final.
The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, March 5th, as they host Manhattan College at Houlihan Park at 3:00 p.m.
