Bronx, N.Y. -
With deepest condolences to his family and friends, Fordham Athletics has lost one of its own, as former Fordham baseball player Santy Gallone was identified as one of the construction workers killed in the crane accident in Manhattan on Saturday. His body was found on Monday, following a two-day search of the area. Gallone was 37 years old, and is survived by his wife, Jessica, and daughter, Giuliana.
Gallone, a 1993 graduate of Fordham College of Business Administration, made his name known on Fordham's Jack Coffey Field, as the Rams' starting second baseman from 1989-92, and still ranks as one of the most decorated offensive players in team history.
Gallone was named Patriot League Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992, and led the Rams to the 1990 ECAC Championship. The Rams made the 1990 NCAA Tournament later that season and pulled off an 8-5 win over Arkansas in the Midwest Regional.
He graduated from Fordham with the school records for most hits (222), career at bats (601), and total bases (354), as well as single season marks for runs scored (59) and for most times hit by a pitch in a season (14) and career (42).
In 1991 and 1992, Gallone earned First Team All-Patriot League and NCAA All-Region honors, as well as garnering ECAC All-Star status. He helped Fordham win three straight league championships, the 1990 MAAC Championship and the 1991 and 1992 Patriot League Championship.
Gallone finished his stellar career at Fordham with a .369 career batting average, 35 doubles, 20 triples, 19 home runs, and 155 RBI, and capped his career by winning the 1992 Vincent T. Lombardi Award, as Fordham's male student-athlete of the year.
In 2000, Gallone received his final collegiate accolade, as he was inducted into the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame.
The wake for Santy Gallone will be at the Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home in Hicksville, N.Y., on Wednesday (2-5 PM and 7-9 PM) and Thursday (2-5 PM and 7-9 PM). The funeral will be at St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore, N.Y. at 10:00 AM on Friday, and he will be laid to rest at Pinelawn Cemetary.
