The Fordham men's 4x800 relay defended their Atlantic 10 title, earning First Team All-Conference honors today, as the Fordham men finished sixth out of ten teams at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship, held this afternoon at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House. Senior Matt Lowenthal (1000 meters) and junior Matt DiBuono (weight throw) also earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors this afternoon.
The men's 4x800 relay of Ryan Serkes, Clifton Hilario, Tom Finnerty, and Matt Lowenthal, who had already qualified for the IC4A Championship later this season, was the lone event winner for Fordham, defending their Atlantic 10 title in a season-best time of 7:50.67.
In addition to the 4x800 relay, Lowenthal and DiBuono placed second in their respective events, earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Lowenthal was second in the 1000 meters in 2:29.58, while DiBuono was second in the weight throw with a toss of 57' 1". DiBuono also scored for Fordham in the shot put, placing sixth (47' ¾")
In the team competition, Charlotte won the indoor championship with a final point total of 181, followed by Rhode Island in second place with 156 points and La Salle in third with 112 points. Temple was fourth with 87 points followed by Massachusetts (58), Fordham (53), Saint Joseph's (40), Richmond (31), Saint Louis (15), and Xavier (8).
Also scoring for the Fordham men were Michael Kearney, Brandon Ryan, Brian Schmidt, Ryan Campi, Chris Kozlowski, and Brian Mulkeen. Kearney and Ryan were sixth and seventh respectively in the 400 meters in 50.70 and 50.89, while Schmidt was eighth in the 500 meters in 1:05.93. Campi placed seventh in the 800 meters in 1:57.97, with Kozlowski taking seventh in the shot put (45' 2 ½") and Mulkeen placing third in the weight throw (56' 2 ½").
In the other men's relays, the 4x400 team of Ryan, Christopher Lyons, Kearney, and Schmidt were third overall in 3:20.63, while the distance medley squad of Brian Horowitz, Austin McLain-Duer, Steve D'Ambrosio, and Tim Hutchinson, was seventh in 10:42.08.
