The Fordham track & field teams competed at the 2008 Metropolitan Championships this afternoon, held at the 168th Street Armory. The Fordham women placed sixth out of 13 teams, while the men were eighth out of 13 teams.
In the women's competition, Seton Hall won the overall title with 152 points, followed by Rutgers (147), Columbia (94), Manhattan (94), St. John's (89), Fordham (57), Marist (27), Wagner (20), Long Island (15), Stony Brook (12), Fairleigh Dickinson (8), Iona (7), and St. Francis (3).
Fordham was led by senior Melissa Salerno, who picked up the lone event win for the Rams in the 1000 meter run in 2:57.01.
The women scored second place finishes in three other events, as junior Jacqueline Prevete was second in the 5000 meters in a season-best time of 18:23.99, sophomore Catherine Groene was second in the triple jump (11.57m), and the 4x800 relay was second overall in 9:21.54.
Other individuals that scored for Fordham were freshman Kerri Gallagher in the 800 meters (7th - 2:18.64), junior Brigid Moriarty in the 5000 meters (3rd - 18:24.00), and junior Jeana Fletcher in the high jump (5th - 1.65m) and pentathlon (3rd - 3,416 pts.).
The women's 4x400 and the distance medley relays also scored for the Rams, as the 4x400 was seventh in 4:16.51, while the DMR was sixth in 12:48.71.
In the men's competition, Manhattan won the overall title with 136 points, followed by Seton Hall (125), Rutgers (106.5), Columbia (91.5), Long Island (72), Fairleigh Dickinson (41), NYU (40), Fordham (32), Wagner (21), Marist (19), Iona (18), Stony Brook (18), and St. Francis (5).
For Fordham, junior Matt DiBuono was the highest finisher, placing second in the weight throw with a toss of 17.94 meters.
The Rams did however have four third place finishes and one fourth place finish. Freshman Brian Schmidt took third in the 500 meters in a season-best time of 1:04.49, while senior Matt Lowenthal placed third in the 1000 meters in 2:31.09 and senior Brian Mulkeen was fourth in the weight throw (15.55m). The 4x400 and 4x800 relays also placed third in season-best times of 3:19.14 and 7:51.30, respectively.
The Rams also scored in the distance medley relay and the heptathlon, as the DMR was fifth overall in 10:33.94, while freshman Augustus Gleason was fifth in the heptathlon with a score of 3,946 points.
Besides the events that Fordham scored in, the Rams set season-best times in four other events, as freshman Christopher Lyons ran 22.94 in the men's 200 meters, senior Michael Kearney ran 49.87 in the men's 400 meters, freshman Casey Barrett ran 15:42.30 in the men's 5000 meters, and junior Kathleen Reilly ran 1:20.10 in the women's 500 meters.
The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on February 9th as they compete in the Valentine's Day Classic in Boston, Massachusetts.
