Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University indoor tack and field squads opened their 2008-09 season tonight by hosting the 2008 Fordham Invitational in the Lombardi Center Fieldhouse. There was no team scoring.
The Fordham men's and women's teams combined to win nine events, led by senior Matt DiBuono who took first in both the weight throw and the shot put. The two-time Second Team All-Atlantic 10 weight thrower won the event with a toss of 60' 10.75", just 7.5" short of his school record, while he took gold in the shot put with a throw of 47' 7.25".
Also winning events for the men were Ken Baron, who took the pole vault competition (10' 2.75"), Vincent Servello, who was victorious in the triple jump (40' 4.25"), Jason Grant, who won the high jump (6' 2") and Tom Finnerty, who crossed the finish line first in the 3000m (8:39.4).
On the women's side, Maggie McGowan took first in the pole vault (10' 2.75"), Kathleen Reilly had the fastest collegiate 800m time (2:20.6) and Bridget Carroll was the first to the tape in the 1000m (3:19.1).
Also turning in solid performances in the first meet of the year for the men were Nick Delligatti, who took second in the 60m (7.0) and third in the 200m (23.7) in his first collegiate meet, Ryan Serkes, who placed second in the 800m (2:00.3), Clifton Hilario, who was second in the 1000m (2:37.7) and Paul Szczepaniak, who took third in the 800m (2:01.5).
Jeana Fletcher and Brigid Moriarty also had a successful first race of the season for the Fordham women with Fletcher taking second in the high jump (5' 1') while Moriarty was third in the 3000m (11:00.7).
The Fordham men's and women's indoor track and field squads will next be in action next Friday night, December 12th, as they host the Fordham Christmas Classic in the Lombardi Center beginning at 3:00 p.m.
