Fordham University freshman guard Jio Fontan (Paterson, N.J./St. Anthony's) was named Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the week ending December 13th it was announced today. This is the first weekly award for Fontan, who becomes the second Ram to earn the honor this year, joining freshman guard Trey Blue who received the award on November 16th.
In two games on the week, Fontan averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 assists while hitting on 13-of-22 field goal attempts (59.1%) and added eleven assists, five rebounds and three steals.
In a 79-58 win over Lafayette on Monday night, a win which snapped Fordham's six-game season-opening losing streak, Fontan scored 13 points and dished out six assists. He followed that with a season-high 22 points along with five assists and three steals on Thursday night in a 69-66 loss to Fairfield.
On the season, Fontan, who scored in double figures in six of his last seven contests, is averaging a team-high 12.4 ppg while also dishing out a team-best 41 assists (5.1 apg).
The Rams will next be in action on Tuesday night, December 23rd, as they host the University of New Hampshire in the Rose Hill Gym at 7:00 p.m.
