The Fordham University men's tennis team closed out a successful weekend, defeating Wagner College, 6-1, on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts on Sunday after picking up a 4-3 win at LaSalle on Saturday. With the win, the Rams improve to 2-2 on the year.
Fordham opened the match taking five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets, led by Dallas Harting who took first singles from Marcelo Ensignia, 6-4 and 6-3. Kevin Maloney won at third singles over Jeremy Beckles, 6-1 and 6-2, while Daris Mattison was victorious at fourth singles over Wagner's Ben Serbak, 6-0 and 6-0. Eli Plangger took fifth singles for the Rams over Sheldon Wilson, 6-0 and 6-0 while Andriy Kulak won at the sixth slot over Wagner's Robert Santana, 6-1 and 6-2.
Fordham almost swept the singles competition with Brandon Abbatiello winning the first set from John LeBlanc, 6-4. But LeBlanc took the second set, 7-6 (7-2) to force a tiebreaker where LeBlanc outlasted Abbatiello, 11-9.
The Rams then took the doubles point, winning all three doubles matches. Peter Slucky and Nick Kelly took first doubles from Ensignia and LeBlanc, 8-3, while Kevin Sullivan and Vincent Lai were victorious at second doubles over Beckles and Serbak, 10-8. Rob Evans and Ken Fukumoto prevailed at third doubles for the Rams with an 8-3 win over Wilson and Santana.
The Rams will next be in action on Tuesday, October 7th, as they host Rider College on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts at 3:30 p.m.
