Fordham Hosts Kick-Off Invitational at the Armory

New York, N.Y. - The Fordham track & field teams returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Fordham Kick-Off Invitational at the 168th St. Armory. The Rams placed sixth out of 15 teams in the women's competition, while the men were seventh out of 14 teams.

Overall, Princeton (127) won the women's team competition, as they just edged Rutgers (126.5), while Manhattan won the men's competition (105.5) over Maryland-Eastern Shore (77) and La Salle (77).

For the Fordham women, junior Jeana Fletcher led the way, scoring in three events. She placed third in the long jump (16' 3 ¼"), fourth in the high jump (5' 3"), and sixth in the shot put (38' ¼").

The top finish for the women came from senior Melissa Salerno and junior Brigid Moriarty, as both placed second in the respective events. Salerno was second in the mile (5:05.29), while Moriarty was second in the 5,000 meters (18:33.65).

Other individuals scorers at the meet were freshman Sherilyn Groeninger in the 60 meters (7th - 8.14), freshman Kerri Gallagher in 1000 meters (6th - 3:07.94), sophomore Bridget Carroll in the 1000 meters (8th - 3:10.21), junior Jacqueline Prevete in the 3,000 meters (7th - 10:45.57), and sophomore Catherine Groene in the triple jump (4th 36' 3 ½").

In relay action, the women's 4x800, consisting of Salerno, Gallagher, Kathleen Reilly, and Catherine Groene, placed third in 9:39.00, while the 4x400, consisting of Groeninger, Ondrea Gallo, Jessica Berry, and Kerry Kwalwasser, finished in seventh in 4:12.23.

For the Fordham men, junior Matt DiBuono and senior Vito Scalia led the way, as they scored in both throwing events. DiBuono was second in the weight throw (57' 9") and fourth in the shot put (44' 6 ¾"), while Scalia placed fifth in the weight (46' 0") and seventh in the shot put (39' ¼").

In the track events, freshman Brian Schmidt posted the top individual finish, taking third in the 500 meters in 1:05.18. Senior Matt Lowenthal was fourth in mile (4:23.32), while sophomore Brian Horowitz was fifth in the 800 meters (1:59.20).

Senior Michael Kearney and junior Clifton Hilario rounded out the scoring for Fordham, as Kearney was eighth in the 400 meters (50.56), while Hilario was eighth in the 500 meters (1:06.35).

In the relays, the 4x800 team of Horowitz, Lowenthal, Ryan Serkes, and Brendan Ceriello placed second in 8:07.81. The 4x400 team of Kearney, Hilario, Schmidt, and Brandon Ryan also scored, as they took fourth in 3:20.75.

The Fordham track & field teams will next be in action on Saturday, January 12th, as they compete at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn.
