Final Stats
New Rochelle, N.Y. -
Coming off their most successful season in school history, the Fordham University women's soccer Rams wanted to get the 2007 season off on the right foot. And they did, traveling up to Iona College and coming away with a 1-0 win.
Junior Katie Sanchez provided the game's only goal, heading a corner kick from Alexis Ribadeneyra past Iona keeper Suzanne Baldissard in the 66th minute for her first goal of the year.
Fordham keeper Jen Byer made the one-goal lead hold up, recording three second half saves for the Rams to notch her first collegiate win and shut out. Her first save was just over three minutes into the second half off a shot by Abby Dixon and a minute later she denied a shot off the foot of Christina Rizzi. Her final save came just after the Rams took the 1-0 lead as Byer preserved the shut out for Fordham.
The Rams had opportunity to score in the first half but Baldissard denied five Fordham scoring chances, including a Kim Boulos header off a Ribadeneyra corner in the 19th minute.
The Rams will next be in action on Friday, September 7th as they travel to Easton, Penn., to face the Lafayette College Leopards at 7 pm.
