Fordham's Xavier Martin Named Patriot League Rookie of the Week

Sept. 17, 2007

Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University freshman running back Xavier Martin (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week it was announced today. This marks the third straight week in which a Ram has earned a Patriot Leaguer weekly honor with Isiejah Allen and Isa Abdul-Quddus earning Defensive and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, in week one and Matt Loucks being named Defensive Player of the Week last week.

In Fordham's 27-10 Liberty Cup win over Columbia University on Saturday, Martin rushed 25 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns. The touchdown runs were of 14, 51 and 4 yards. The game marked his first collegiate action as he missed the first two games while a paperwork issue between his high school and the NCAA Clearinghouse was cleared up.

The 157 yards gained by Martin was the second most for a Fordham freshman since the Rams moved to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in 1989, second to Kirwin Watson's 161 yards against Holy Cross in 2000.

The Rams (2-1) will next be in action on Saturday, September 22nd, as they host the University of Dayton Flyers on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 pm as part of Homecoming 2007.
