West Point, N.Y. - The Fordham softball team opened their fall season this weekend at the Army/DeVito Tournament. The Rams won their fourth straight championship at Army as they defeated Marist and Army.
The Rams opened with a 10-1 win over Marist, and then faced Army in the championship, following their win over Manhattan. Fordham then defeated Army by an 8-3 final score.
The Rams bats were on fire all day, collecting 28 hits to go with 18 runs scored versus just four allowed.
Nicole Ayers got both wins as she gave up no runs in six innings pitched. She pitched the first four innings against Marist and two innings of relief in game 2. Allison Twarowski pitched the last two innings of the Army game facing six batters, and not allowing a hit. Beckah Wiggins started the Army game giving up two hits and three unearned runs in three innings. Earlier, she pitched the final three innings against Marist, allowing two hits with five strikeouts.
Twarowski was selected the tournament MVP, after going 5-for-8 with five runs scored. Erin Fisher had home runs on consecutive at bats in the Army game, while Melissa Andrews hit a home run as well. Allison Storc was 4-for-8 with six RBI over the two games.
The Rams first four batters, Andrews, Twarowski, Fisher and Storc, combined for 19 hits and 13 runs scored.
The Fordham softball team's next fall tournament is on September 15-16, as they participate in the Bagsai College Invitational in Binghamton, N.Y. The Rams take on Army (8:00 AM), Vermont (12:00 PM), and Rutgers (2:00 PM) on Saturday, with Sunday's games determined by record.
