Women's Soccer Opens Exhibition Play With 1-1 Tie Against Marist

Aug. 25, 2007

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham women's soccer team got their preseason action underway this afternoon, as they took on Marist College at Jack Coffey Field. The two teams played three 30-minute periods and to a 1-1 tie.

Though only two goals were scored, there was plenty of action as three shots hit crossbars and stayed out of the net.

In the first period, Marist's Kate Fox hit the crossbar, keeping the game scoreless. Fordham then had the same luck as Corey Cerrato's header also was denied by the crossbar.

In the second, Marist thought they had taken a lead on a goal by Laura Zasly, as her shot hit the cross bar, and deflected straight down. The ball hit the goal line, but never crossed it, leaving the game scoreless.

Fordham finally broke the tie in the 38th minute, as Catherine Huvane's free kick was deflected and headed in by Liane Schoenstein.

The score stayed at 1-0 until the 71st minute, as Marist's Katie Zasly beat Elisabeth Roald to the far post, off a cross from Alex Lauterborn.

In net, Roald played the first and third periods for Fordham with Jen Byer playing the second.

Fordham will have their second and final preseason contest on Monday, August 27th, as they play at Yale, beginning at 7:00 PM.
