FORDHAM'S JAMES SAMMUT NAMED ATLANTIC 10 BASEBALL CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK

May 21, 2007

Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University graduate student James Sammut (San Bruno, CA/St. Ignatius College HS) earned his second career Atlantic 10 weekly honor this afternoon, as Sammut was named Atlantic 10 Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week. He earned Pitcher of the Week honors once last season as well. He shares the award with Charlotte's Spencer Steedley.

Sammut compiled a 3-0 record with a save in four relief appearances this week, as Fordham ended their regular season on a 10-game win streak. In total, he threw seven shutout innings of relief as the Rams swept a doubleheader from Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, as well as winning all three games against La Salle.

On Tuesday, he picked up the win in relief in game one of a doubleheader against FDU, while recording his fifth save of the season in the nightcap. After recording another relief win on Thursday against La Salle, Sammut threw a season-high four innings and tied a career-high with five strikeouts, as he recorded his third win of the week.

Sammut and the Fordham Baseball team (33-20, 19-8) look to extend their current 10-game winning streak on Thursday, May 24th at the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship in Dayton, Ohio. Receiving a first round bye after recording a team record 19 conference wins, the Rams are the #2 seed and will face the winner of the Richmond/St. Bonaventure game, as they try to claim their first Atlantic 10 title since 1998.
