ACWPC ANNOUNCES ALL-AMERICAN ACADEMIC TEAM FOR 2006

(February 19, 2007) - The ACWPC proudly announced the 2006 Men??s All-American Academic Team on February 16th, which included five members of the Fordham Water Polo team. Senior Jonathan Almy (West Simsbury, CT/Phillips Exeter Academy), sophomores Timmy Will (Sunrise, FL/Miami Beach Sr.) and Troy Gordon (Carenage, Trinidad & Tobago/St. Mary??s), and freshmen Tom Conroy (Annapolis, MD/DeMatha Catholic) and Andrew Dentinger (Danville, CA/De La Salle) demonstrated excellence in the classroom as well as in the pool. ??Managing a strenuous course load while participating in an intercollegiate sport is a very challenging task??, said ACWPC Executive Director, Mike Lewis. ??We are proud to see such a large number of athletes (164) meet the criteria of a GPA of 3.2 and above. This is emblematic of water polo??s tradition of supporting both academic and athletic prowess.?? Almy, Gordon and Will all earned Superior standing with a GPA of 3.4 or higher, while Conroy and Dentinger received Excellent standing for a GPA of 3.2 or higher. Almy, a business administration major, served as a co-captain on this year??s water polo team and was the lone senior. This is the fourth time he has received this Academic honor. He appeared in 22 matches this fall, tallying two goals and six assists for eight points, while adding on five steals. Gordon, a sophomore studying finance, was a new addition to the team this season, after transferring from Loyola Marymount. He played in all 23 games this year for Fordham, scoring six goal and eight assists for 14 points, while tacking on 12 steals. Will, a sophomore who also received similar honors last season, served as the Rams?? starting netminder for the second straight season. He led the team with 195 saves, while posting 43 steals and eight assists. Based on current available records, his 195 saves is the second most by a Fordham player behind only P.J. Toolan, who had 207 saves in 2003. Conroy, a freshman currently studying computer science, saw action in 22 games for the Rams in his first season. Overall, he notched a pair of goals and nine assists for 11 points, while he tied for fourth on the team with 22 steals. Dentinger, a freshman currently studying in history, was the Rams?? top freshman scorer, ranking fifth on the team with 27 points. He tallied 12 goals and 15 assists for the 27 points, while being second in steals with 28. The ACWPC is a non-profit organization devoted exclusively to the interest of college water polo.
